The foldable iPhone expected to launch in 2026 will likely not feature Face ID, Apple’s default biometric authentication method for years. According to the latest leaks, Apple is considering removing this facial recognition system to reduce production costs for the product line.
Face ID is one of the most complex and expensive hardware technologies in the current iPhone architecture. Integrating this system into a foldable device, which has a hinge mechanism and a space-constrained design, is considered a major engineering challenge. A source said that Apple is prioritizing investment in the quality of the hinge and the foldable screen, with the goal of creating a device with the “best hardware quality”.
However, leaked specs for the foldable iPhone suggest that the device may not be completely superior to rivals like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold7. While Apple is still aiming for a product with a transparent fold, sacrificing Face ID could hurt the user experience.
Removing Face ID would mean losing a key part of the iPhone experience. While some users may find Touch ID more convenient, most iPhone users are already accustomed to unlocking their phones with their faces. Without Face ID, users may not choose the foldable iPhone when it first launched, despite its premium design and powerful performance.
Apple's removal of Face ID from the foldable iPhone could also be related to its long-term strategy to prepare for the 20th anniversary iPhone Pro product line, which is expected to feature Face ID hidden under the panel.
Meanwhile, users who don't care too much about the folding factor can look for alternatives like the Galaxy Z Fold7, Oppo Find N5 or Honor Magic V5. These are all devices that are highly rated for screen quality and battery capacity. However, Apple's decision shows that the company is very confident in the design and overall experience of the foldable iPhone.
