Mr. Luong Van Binh is one of the pioneers in growing ornamental plants in Lien Thon 1 village. Sharing about his connection with the profession of growing ornamental plants, Mr. Binh said: In 2018, during a visit to a relative's house in Hung Yen province, I bought a Moc Huong tree to plant. After a period of care, the tree grew well and bloomed beautifully. In 2021, by chance, a neighbor filmed a video of the family's Moc Huong tree and posted it on social media, receiving much attention from the community of people who love ornamental plants. A small trader in Thai Nguyen province proactively contacted and agreed to buy the tree for more than 14 million VND. Realizing that this is a type of ornamental plant with high economic value, since 2021, the family has converted dry fields to grow Moc Huong trees and many other types of ornamental plants.
Up to now, Mr. Binh's family has more than 1 hectare of ornamental plants of various types such as: magnolia, cycad, magnolia... To have care techniques, in addition to learning on social networks, Mr. Binh also proactively visited and learned from experiences at some ornamental plant gardens in Hung Yen province. Thanks to that, the ornamental plants in his garden have grown well and are favored by many customers. From 2024 to now, his family has sold many batches of ornamental plants, earning more than 170 million VND.
Not only Mr. Binh's family, 5 years ago, Mr. Luong Van Phong's family in Keo Be village also boldly invested in planting ornamental trees. Mr. Phong said: My family currently has more than 1 hectare of magnolia trees (about 7,000 trees). For the trees to grow well, I regularly check the garden, prune and shape the canopy; at the same time, fertilize periodically and water to ensure enough moisture for the trees to grow and develop. After 3 to 4 years of care, the family chose to sell the trees to the market. From 2024 to now, the family has earned over 70 million VND from selling magnolia trees.
It is known that more than 5 years ago, some households in Thong Nhat commune pioneered in bringing ornamental plants to grow. After a period of planting and caring for them, seeing that they were suitable for local soil conditions as well as bringing economic efficiency, many households learned and followed suit. The whole commune currently has more than 30 households developing ornamental plant cultivation of all kinds with an area of nearly 7 hectares; mainly concentrated in the villages: Lien Thon 1, Keo Be... Households that grow small have 3 to 4 sao, households that grow large have an area of more than 1 mau. The types of trees that people mainly grow are: magnolia, cycads... These types of trees, after 2 to 3 years of care, will be purchased by traders at prices ranging from several hundred thousand to several million VND/tree. The main consumer market is traders from Hung Yen and Bac Ninh provinces... Thanks to growing ornamental plants, the average income of people is from 30 to 40 million VND/household/year, high income households are over 120 million VND/year.
Ms. Hoang Thi Tau, Head of the Economic Department of Thong Nhat Commune, said: The whole commune currently has more than 3,000 households, mainly engaged in agricultural production. Recently, some households in the commune have boldly converted dry fields to develop ornamental plant growing models. Initially, it was found that ornamental plants are suitable for local soil conditions, bringing economic efficiency 2 to 3 times higher than some other crops such as rice and corn. In the coming time, the department will advise the Commune People's Committee to pay attention to organizing training courses, instructing people on care techniques; instructing people to access preferential loans to expand production... At the same time, the department will advise the commune government to pay attention to orienting and arranging appropriate capital sources to support the replication of the model.
The ornamental tree planting model in Thong Nhat commune has initially brought high economic efficiency to the people. We believe that the model will continue to develop stably, thereby opening up a new, sustainable economic direction, increasing income for people in the area.
