Wax coconut is a type of coconut with a thick flesh and a distinctive flavor, so it is popular with many people. To grow and propagate this type of tree, you need to pay attention to basic growing techniques.
First of all, the propagation of wax coconut is mainly by fruit. Therefore, coconuts for breeding must be selected from parent trees over 10 years old, coconut trees with wax, healthy, disease-free. Choose bunches with many fruits, large fruits, beautiful colors (note to choose water coconuts). If choosing wax fruits, the fruits will not germinate. Pick the coconuts, hang them on a line to dry, then peel them, place them on the ground or put them in plastic bags containing coconut fiber, manure, and bring them to the nursery.
Make a trellis to block the light, water once a day, no need to water during the rainy season. After about 35 days in the nursery, the fruit will germinate. When germinating, spray foliar fertilizer to stimulate leaf and root growth. Continue to care for another 25 days, when the coconut tree is 50cm tall and the roots grow out of the coconut shell, it can be planted.
Wax coconut is very suitable for light sandy soil, can be planted around pond banks, canal banks, if planting large area, should be planted concentratedly. Dig a large hole, or on a mound, mix manure, rice husk ash, organic fertilizer, cover with a thin layer of soil. Lower the coconut tree, cover with soil tightly, covering the surface of the root ball.
After planting, water once a day. After 30 days of planting, fertilize with urea, 1 handful per tree. When the tree flowers, 1kg of NPK fertilizer can be applied. Fertilize by digging a trench around the base of the coconut, 1.5m from the base, put the fertilizer in and then cover it with soil. If you want the wax coconut tree to have a high wax ratio (thick flesh), when the tree flowers, artificial pollination is needed. Before pollination, male pollen must be collected from the wax tree's mo bung 2-3 days old. This is when the male pollen is old and strong enough, the female flowers will pollinate more strongly.
To prevent pests for wax coconut trees, wash the canopy once a year and cut the dry leaf sheaths twice to avoid rats from biting and destroying them. Coconut trees rarely get sick, but they are often damaged by coconut beetles, so parasitic wasps should be raised in coconut gardens to destroy beetles.
If well cared for, wax coconuts will start to yield fruit in the third year (good harvest in the fifth year). A wax coconut tree can yield 100 fruits/year, with a wax fruit ratio of about 30%.
