Binh Thuan enhances and diversifies OCOP products

Starting later than other provinces and cities, Binh Thuan only started implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program in 2019. However, after 6 years, the program has achieved many important results, OCOP products are increasingly diverse, contributing to promoting rural economic development and improving people's lives.

Closer to consumers

If about 3 years ago, when asked what an OCOP product was, many people were surprised and unfamiliar, now, when going to supermarket systems and convenience stores in the province, many OCOP products are seen filling the shelves. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in recent times, the OCOP Program in the province has achieved positive results. Through the OCOP program, the subjects have increasingly improved the quality of products, especially 4-star OCOP products, which are increasingly invested in design and style, attracting consumers. Many products are being accepted by the market and can be upgraded to 5-star OCOP products in the near future.

Up to now, Binh Thuan has 189 OCOP products that are still valid, including 7 4-star OCOP products and 182 3-star OCOP products. The province's OCOP products are strong and typical products such as: Fish sauce, dragon fruit products, seafood products... Many OCOP products such as dragon fruit wine (Ham Duc dragon fruit cooperative), Bao Long dragon fruit juice (Bao Long Production and Trade Service Facility), dried sliced ​​anchovies, tamarind squid, grilled goby fish, garlic butter squid (Dam Sen Processing and Trading Company Limited); Ba Hai Lu fish sauce (Ba Hai Fish Sauce Company Limited), Black Fish fish sauce... have been introduced to the supermarket systems of Co.opmart Phan Thiet, Phan Ri Cua and La Gi, the province's OCOP product display stores, convenience stores... helping to expand distribution channels, widely promote to consumers and increase stable consumption capacity.

Recently, the Provincial OCOP Product Evaluation and Classification Council has agreed on the results of 21 products that meet the 4-star OCOP standard to submit to the Provincial People's Committee for recognition and certification of 4-star OCOP products at the provincial level in 2025. Most of them are traditional products with outstanding strengths of the province, especially fish sauce (14 products), dried squid (2 products), fresh dragon fruit (1 product), along with 2 seaweed products and 2 chicken egg products. Previously, the province had awarded certificates to 7 products that achieved 4-star OCOP certification in 2024, including 2 fish sauce units with 3 products: Original premium anchovy fish sauce with 32 degrees of nitrogen - Hoang Gia brand of Van Xuan FMCG Investment Company Limited (Tuy Phong); 2 anchovy fish sauce products with 35 degrees of nitrogen and 60 degrees of nitrogen of Thuan Hung Company Limited (Phan Thiet).

4 star OCOP fish sauce

With abundant anchovy resources and a long-standing tradition of fermenting fish sauce with a secret recipe, the people of Binh Thuan in general and Phan Thiet in particular have created drops of golden, delicious, and rich fish sauce that are very unique. Although it was established after other fish sauce production facilities, starting in 2014, but with a passion for fish sauce making, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phung - Director of Thuan Hung Fish Sauce Company Limited has researched, explored, and created his own secret based on the long-standing fermenting recipe of the local people with a ratio of 3 fish, 1 salt (3 tons of fish and 1 ton of salt).

The units have actively participated in trade promotion events, fairs, and conferences connecting supply and demand.

From a small facility that only sold raw fish sauce and processed it for large companies, Thuan Hung has now become a name in the market, supplying about 2 million liters/year of both raw fish sauce and bottled products. “In particular, the company's 60-degree-nitrogen anchovy fish sauce is a premium fish sauce with a high protein content, often produced by traditional methods and requiring techniques and a fermentation time of up to 2 years. To reach 60 degrees of protein, the fish sauce is naturally dried in the sun to evaporate the water, increasing the protein content. Although this method takes time, it retains the traditional flavor, has a transparent dark brown color and has a moderate salty taste, sweet from the protein, and is very popular with customers,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang - Production Manager of Thuan Hung Company.

In recent years, implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, households and small-scale fish sauce production facilities in Phan Thiet City have begun to explore and change traditional production practices, gradually improving their brands in terms of design and quality, producing products that meet the criteria of 3-star and 4-star OCOP products, not only meeting the domestic market but also exporting. Currently, Phan Thiet has many fish sauce products with 4-star OCOP certification that are highly appreciated by consumers inside and outside the province such as: Ba Hai fish sauce, Tin fish sauce (Seagull Company Limited); Phan Thiet Mui Ne fish sauce, Suchi pure anchovy fish sauce, Black Fish fish sauce... Most of these units have products exported to markets such as the US, Korea, Japan...

Being recognized as a 4-star OCOP not only creates conditions for products to reach out to markets outside the province, but also opens up opportunities to participate in national voting, aiming for export. From this result, provincial departments and branches will continue to implement activities to support production, promote trade, build brands, create jobs and actively contribute to the process of building new rural areas in Binh Thuan.
