“Insurance” for heritage

At the ceremony to announce national intangible cultural heritages and the decision to rank historical and cultural relics at the city level in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of March, Portcoast Consulting Joint Stock Company (Portcoast) donated all digital products of the City Theater to the Ho Chi Minh City Arts Center.

This event has received much attention from cultural heritage researchers. Because in the face of the challenge of time, architectural works over 100 years old need an “insurance” that not only meets the need for digitizing heritage but also helps restore the work to its original state in case of a risk.

Not stopping at the Virtual 360 solution and 3D model of the building, Portcoast has applied digital technology to the City Theater according to the heritage building information model (H-BIM, Heritage Building Information Modeling). This is a technology that UNESCO encourages to apply globally, helping managers to effectively implement relic digitization projects and preserve the cultural values of humanity.

Accordingly, part of the work in the H-BIM model is to use 3D laser scanning, recreating each sculptural pattern, the characteristic curved roof with the relief of two angels and the Lyre typical of Greek mythology and the layers of walls bearing the mark of time. Thanks to that, the magnificent space of the City Theater is preserved accurately, serving the conservation work as well as architectural research later.

Mr. Tran Tan Phuc, Chairman of Portcoast Board of Directors, analyzed: “Virtual 360 and 3D models of displayed artifacts are useful tools, helping viewers experience the heritage in a visual and vivid way, even when they cannot visit directly. However, these tools cannot replace the assessment of the current condition of the work, detect conservation issues and identify appropriate restoration and conservation solutions. Meanwhile, the use of 3D laser scan data to create an H-BIM model helps to accurately identify details, thereby making restoration or renovation easier and true to the original of the work”.

In fact, it can be seen that digitizing heritage is a development trend in life 4.0, however, modern technology needs to be the right choice, so that the value of hundreds or thousands of years is completely "insured" against the challenge of time.
