Mr. Truong Van Bay (living in An Long commune) takes advantage of the time he spends talking with his children to teach them how to prevent the dangers of drowning and injuries.

Many months have passed, but the family of Mr. Huynh Van Bi, residing in An Long commune (formerly An Phong commune, Thanh Binh district) is still grieving over the tragic drowning accident of his 4-year-old grandson.

With a face full of sadness, Mr. Huynh Van Bi said: “Although my family took good care of my grandson, the heartbreaking incident still happened. Every day, my grandson would run to the school near our house to play for a while and then come back. However, that day, after his grandmother fed him, he ran off to play. After a short while, the family could not find him and went to look for him, but were shocked to discover that he had fallen into the river behind the house and died from drowning. Losing our grandson was a great pain for my family.”

From the heartbreaking incident above, once again reminding families to be careful in caring for and protecting children. Especially now in the summer, children are home from school, have the opportunity to go out with friends. If families are negligent in taking care of children, there will be many potential risks of children being injured, drowning, and traffic accidents. Many families have raised awareness, been careful in managing, looking after and teaching children how to identify dangers to prevent injuries and drowning to ensure children's safety during the summer.

Mr. Truong Van Bay (born in 1951) of An Long commune (formerly An Phong commune, Thanh Binh district) often advises his children not to play near the river to avoid drowning, and not to run and play on the street to prevent traffic accidents. Mr. Truong Van Bay said: “My family has 3 grandchildren, one is 11 years old, one is 9 years old and the other is 10 months old. Since the drowning accident of the neighbor's grandchild, my family has been very careful in taking care of the grandchildren. Currently, my grandchildren are on summer vacation at home. Every day, I always remind them to ask where they want to go, and only then do they have my permission. When they are away for a moment, I immediately look for them. In particular, I do not let my grandchildren play behind the house because it is adjacent to a large river, which is very dangerous. I plan to send my two older grandchildren to swimming lessons to ensure their safety.”

Along with caring for, nurturing, and carefully looking after children, many families have been aware and proactive in protecting children from the risks of drowning and injury accidents by teaching children life skills. Ms. Pham Thi Dung (born in 1967), residing in An Long commune, shared: “I have a grandchild in grade 6. I think adults play an important role in caring for and protecting children. Not only giving them good food, warm clothes, and fun, but also protecting children from accidents and drowning is very important, especially in the summer. Learning from the tragic accidents and drownings that have occurred, I keep a close eye on my grandchild. When he was just learning to walk, I did not let him go to places with basins, jars, or water jars to avoid putting his head in them, which is very dangerous. When he became aware, I taught him to understand the dangers of drowning and injuries and taught him to swim to prevent accidents.”

Ms. Luu Thi Kim Tuyet (born in 1986), residing in An Long commune, said: “My house is near a major road with a lot of traffic. This summer, my children are home from school so they often go out to play with their friends in the neighborhood. To ensure their safety, I close the gate regularly and tell them to ask their parents when they go out; and to ask an adult to help them cross the street. I think it is very important to teach my children safety skills. I try to teach them about the dangers of traffic accidents and injuries such as scratches and scrapes that can easily occur when running, jumping, and playing so that they know how to prevent them.”

Summer is the time when children have more time at home and play freely with friends, so there are many potential risks of accidents and injuries. During the summer months, all levels, sectors and localities in the province have increased the number of training courses on skills to prevent drowning, traffic accidents and child abuse. Participants are children in especially difficult circumstances, at risk of falling into special circumstances and grandparents who directly care for children. Through training courses, children and caregivers are equipped with useful knowledge, contributing to the prevention of drowning and accidents and injuries in children.

According to the Department of Health of Dong Thap province, during the summer, especially during the Month of Action for Children 2025 (June), the Department organized many training courses for parents and caregivers; organized dozens of life skills training courses for children... to raise awareness of the community, children, and caregivers about caring for and ensuring the safety of children.

A meaningful summer for children is not only about participating in fun and recreational activities but also requires the care, protection andeducation of life skills for children by caregivers. From there, creating a healthy living environment, ensuring the safety of children's lives.
