US Vice President Kamala Harris appeared at a memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery, her first public event since conceding defeat in the US election.

Ms Harris laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with President Biden. In his remarks at the ceremony, President Biden said that caring for veterans is a “truly sacred duty” and mentioned that this was his last time attending the ceremony as commander in chief. “It was the greatest honor of my life,” President Biden said.
Some in the audience stood up and applauded as Harris was introduced, Reuters reported. The vice president, seated between his husband Doug Emhoff and first lady Jill Biden, greeted others before the program began.
This is Ms. Harris's first public event since her concession speech on November 6.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other officials also attended the event.
Vice President Harris did not speak at the event and then returned to Washington DC, ending her public schedule for the day.

This is Ms. Harris's first public event since she conceded on November 6. Ms. Harris's defeat and the possibility of Republicans controlling both houses of Congress put Democrats in a weak position in American politics for years to come.
Harris entered the race in July after Biden dropped out. Some Democrats criticized the leader for not leaving the race sooner. Despite conceding defeat to Donald Trump, Harris said she would fight for the causes that drove her campaign. The vice president and president have both promised a peaceful transfer of power on January 20, 2025. President Biden is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on November 12.
