Arsenal are making significant progress in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, with talks underway and the Swede expressing his desire to join the Gunners.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal and Sporting are currently discussing the details of a transfer deal, with manager Mikel Arteta reported setting a deadline to complete the deal in order to secure his attacking options ahead of the new season.
Although an official fee has yet to be agreed, personal terms have been agreed between Arsenal and Gyokeres, with a five-year contract. The striker born in 1998 is also said to have planned a move to the Emirates Stadium for many months.
However, the biggest sticking point now is the payment structure. According to Record, Arsenal have offered £56m, plus £13m in add-ons – a total of £69m, which is exactly Sporting's asking price. However, the Portuguese side are unhappy that the bulk of the money comes from add-ons, and are demanding a guaranteed fee of £60.3m up front.
Gyokeres, who has been linked with a move to the club, could not hide his frustration at the stalled negotiations on Sunday. He is said to have contacted Sporting president Frederico Varandas directly to express his "disappointment" that the deal had not progressed as expected.
The Swede has enjoyed a stellar season for Sporting, scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions. His form has made him a top target for Arsenal this summer, with Arteta's side looking to add attacking firepower to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League.
If the deal is completed in the coming days, this will be Arsenal's next notable signing after almost reaching an agreement to recruit midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Along with that, the Emirates team is still actively negotiating for a number of other positions to complete the squad for the 2025-2026 season.
