The consignment includes nine active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) manufactured in India and will be delivered to Cuban units for the production of essential antibiotics in the form of tablets, capsules, syrups and injections, which are essential for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases.

In a statement on the same day, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stressed that this aid shipment demonstrates India's position as a "global pharmacy" and reaffirms New Delhi's commitment to friendship with Havana.

India is one of Cuba’s top 20 trading partners and pharmaceuticals and chemicals dominate the $32 million worth of exports to the island nation in the 2023-24 fiscal year. In addition to bilateral trade, New Delhi has also provided Havana with important lines of credit for projects in agriculture and renewable energy.

Since then-Indian President Ram Nath Kovind's visit to Cuba in 2018, the two countries have maintained regular contact. Indian Minister of External Affairs and Culture Meenakashi Lekhi visited the Caribbean island nation in January 2023 to strengthen political dialogue and economic ties.
