7 tips to reduce foot swelling due to hot weather

VnExpressVnExpress23/06/2023

Massage, gentle exercise, and mineral supplementation are ways to help reduce swelling in the feet and ankles caused by high temperatures.

Hot summer weather can cause a number of conditions such as: difficulty sleeping, dehydration, fever... Another effect, according to experts, is that during hot months, body temperature increases. To cool down, blood vessels will constrict, forcing the body to work harder to transport blood to the heart. This causes fluid to move down to the ankles and feet, seeping into the tissue, causing swelling, also known as heat edema. Here are some tips to help reduce this condition.

Stay active

Maintaining daily activities such as exercising, walking, swimming... will help increase blood circulation and reduce fluid accumulation. In addition, these activities also bring many other benefits such as: improving mood, absorbing vitamin D from sunlight, increasing body flexibility. People should also be active and rest in a cool place when suffering from heat edema.

Raise your legs high

When swelling occurs, elevate your feet several times a day to help drain fluid from your feet and legs. While sleeping, prop your feet up on pillows, which is especially helpful for people with diabetes.

Eat fresh food

Nutritionists advise people to limit their consumption of packaged foods, which are high in processed salt. These can increase inflammation in the body.

Provide minerals and water

When you sweat, your body releases minerals, so you need to replace them. Important minerals are potassium, which is found in fruits and vegetables; sodium in sea salt; magnesium in green leafy vegetables and dark chocolate. You should also stay hydrated, reduce alcohol intake, and avoid excess caffeine.

Massage

Massaging your feet and ankles helps to increase circulation and stimulate blood flow. You can do a gentle massage, towards the heart and use some essential oils such as coconut oil or olive oil to make the massage easier and more relaxing.

Avoid hot baths

Hot baths can cause blood vessels to constrict, causing circulation problems. Instead, take a warm bath, drink a large glass of water, and put your feet up to relax.

Don't wear tight shoes.

Tight or constricting shoes increase swelling in hot weather, so go barefoot whenever possible.
