Heavy trucks operating cause traffic insecurity in rural areas

Living near the foot of Thuy Khe bridge, close to the Trung Hai - Gio My route, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (born in 1983), in Thuy Khe village, was quite upset when talking about the situation of trucks carrying dirt causing traffic safety problems. "Trucks of several dozen tons operating all day long make it unbearable for the people. The rural road is small and narrow, people live on both sides, but the trucks are running at high speed, so when they see them from afar, everyone has to proactively move to one side to avoid them," Ms. Hien said.

Like many other people, Ms. Hien's concern is traffic safety, especially for her children who go to school on this route every day. "My little child was recently hit by a truck right in front of the gate, luckily he only suffered minor scratches. The children are on summer vacation these days, so my husband and I remind them to lock the gate at home and absolutely not go out on the street," Ms. Hien added.

According to records, the Trung Hai - Gio My road is paved with asphalt and is about 4 meters wide. Because the road is narrow, every time a truck passes by, other vehicles must move to the side to avoid collisions. Therefore, people's concerns about the situation of trucks carrying dirt and rocks causing traffic safety problems are well-founded.

Not only is traffic safety at risk, heavy trucks operating through the area also seriously affect traffic works, especially degraded bridges. For example, Thuy Khe bridge has a permitted load capacity of 13 tons, but trucks over 20 tons still openly pass by. According to the reporter's actual records on the morning of June 5, Thuy Khe bridge is 4.6 meters wide, so every time a truck passes, other vehicles must give way. Every time a truck passes, the bridge shakes.

Chairman of Trung Hai Commune People's Committee Le Van Son confirmed the above situation and said that not only Trung Hai - Gio My route but also Route 76 Dong through the commune is in the same situation. "These trucks carry soil, rocks, materials for the project and occasionally there are private vehicles with large loads operating. Rural roads in Trung Hai commune have a load capacity of only 10 tons, while trucks carrying soil and rocks are all over 24 cubic meters, so they are not guaranteed. Moreover, in the area there are 2 weak bridges, Hai Chu bridge and Thuy Khe bridge, both with a load capacity of less than 15 tons, so the risk of collapse and traffic accidents is very clear," Mr. Son informed.

The report of the Traffic Safety Committee of Gio Linh district also said that recently, many trucks (Howo, dump trucks...) carrying construction materials such as sand, soil, and rocks have been traveling through rural roads in Trung Hai commune, specifically route 76 Dong and the Trung Hai - Gio My route (through Cao Xa village, Thuy Khe village). These vehicles show signs of violating the load limit, causing traffic insecurity and seriously affecting traffic works, especially degraded bridges such as Rao Truong bridge and Thuy Khe bridge.

Faced with the above situation, the Traffic Safety Committee of Gio Linh district has urgently requested the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee and the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police to pay attention, direct the inspection and strictly handle cases of vehicles violating the load limit when traveling in Trung Hai commune. The purpose is to ensure traffic safety and order and protect the existing traffic infrastructure.
