Highest productivity ever
Chi Minh Commune was established on July 1, 2025 on the basis of merging 3 communes of Tu Ky district, Hai Duong province (old), including: Chi Minh, An Thanh and Van To. This is one of the communes with the largest organic rice growing area in Hai Phong city, mainly concentrated in the old An Thanh commune with 317 hectares.
At this time, farmers in Chi Minh commune have completed harvesting over 1,480 hectares of the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop. Mr. Tran Xuan Thang, Head of the Economic Department of Chi Minh commune, happily said that this year's winter-spring crop, the average rice yield reached 67 - 68 quintals/ha, the highest in more than 10 years.
The organic rice area planted outside the Thai Binh River dike and part of the area inside the dike alone has the highest yield ever.
Mr. Pham Xuan Luan, Director of An Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative (Chi Minh Commune) said that previously, farmers in the commune mainly grew rice seedlings in areas outside the dike with the aim of creating a favorable environment for the development of two natural specialties, earthworms and clams.
In recent years, the cooperative has actively coordinated testing and mobilized farmers to expand the planting area of some high-quality rice varieties, mainly ST25, on the area exploited for earthworms and crabs to increase production value.
This crop, the yield of ST25 rice in Chi Minh commune reached an average of 5.5 tons/ha, 5 tons/ha higher than last year's winter-spring crop. Many families in the commune planted 3-4 hectares of ST25 rice, earning dozens of tons of rice. People were very happy and excited because the winter-spring rice crop was a good one.
ST25 is a fragrant rice variety with delicious rice quality, favored by the market, so both fresh and dry rice are easy to sell and have good prices. This crop, farmers in Chi Minh commune sell fresh ST25 rice in the field at a price of 10,000 - 10,500 VND/kg, much higher than other rice varieties by 2,500 - 3,000 VND/kg.
Opportunity to upgrade after merger
Farmers in Chi Minh commune are not only happy about the bumper rice crop but also expect that the organic rice brand will have a great opportunity to improve when Hai Duong province merges with Hai Phong city.
Organic rice is clean and pure because the production process from planting to packaging does not use any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, preservatives... Before merging with Hai Phong City, the old An Thanh commune was successful in developing an organic rice production area combined with sustainable exploitation of rươi and cay. This locality also built the OCOP product Bai ruoi rice.
However, due to the small cultivation area, Bai Ruoi Rice products are mainly sold to Hanoi or purchased as gifts by agencies and businesses in the former Hai Duong province.
Now, the opportunity to expand the organic rice cultivation area and improve the organic rice of Chi Minh commune is very potential. The commune currently has about 115 hectares of rice fields outside the Thai Binh riverbank that are exploiting rươi and cay, which can be combined with rice cultivation according to organic processes. Many areas in the fields can also produce rice according to this method. The expanded organic rice area will increase the yield and product of Bai ruoi rice.
Hai Phong currently has many supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions. These are the places where Bai Ruoi Rice products of Chi Minh commune can completely find a place if the output meets the market demand and advertising and investment promotion activities receive more attention in the coming time.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Director of New Generation Agriculture Joint Stock Company in Chi Minh Commune, said that through research, he learned that each year the old Hai Duong province has about 700 hectares of rice produced according to organic standards, and the old Hai Phong City has more than 1,000 hectares. There is still a lot of room for the development of organic rice production areas in the new Hai Phong City.
Hai Phong City has enough potential to expand the growing area, build and develop organic rice into one of the famous agricultural brands, bringing high economic value to both farmers and businesses. The consumption of Bai Ruoi Rice is in season. Businesses have proposed to the Hai Phong City Tourism Association to pay attention to organizing programs to promote and advertise organic rice and products related to Ruoi and Cay in potential places.
