The Miracle of Co Loa: From Wasteland to Iconic Construction
Last fall, the vacant land along the Red River in Dong Anh, Hanoi was still overgrown with weeds. But on August 30, 2024, when Vingroup officially broke ground on the Vietnam Exhibition Center, a miraculous journey began. And in less than 10 months, a Top 10 exhibition center in the world stood tall, opening a new chapter of development for the capital's economy and the whole country.
“Everything happened so quickly that it was like a miracle,” said Nguyen Dinh Long, a resident of Dong Anh.
Mr. Long said that from a desolate land, the area along the Red River is brightened day by day by the presence of thousands of workers, engineers, and modern machinery working day and night. Each week that passes is a change, each month is a new look.
On June 27, Kim Quy Exhibition Hall - the world's largest circular exhibition hall with a total area of 104,863 m2, and 4 outdoor exhibition parks with a total area of over 200,000 m2, ranked Top 3 in the world - were officially completed and handed over, ready to serve the exhibition of socio -economic achievements on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of National Day.
“I was very surprised. With such a scale, completing it in 10 months is unprecedented in Vietnam - especially in the context of many difficulties for businesses in recent years. But Vingroup not only did it, but also exceeded expectations,” said economist Pham Chi Lan.
Vingroup once again created a miracle when handing over the Vietnam Exhibition Center after less than 10 months.
This is not the first time Vingroup has turned the impossible into possible. In 2019, the Group set an unprecedented record in the world automobile industry when it completed the VinFast Factory and successfully developed the first three car models in just 21 months - while the global standard time is usually from 36 to 60 months.
“Vingroup has affirmed its position as an enterprise with outstanding execution capabilities, guaranteeing both project progress and quality,” emphasized the former member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Group.
From an economic perspective, Dr. Vo Tri Thanh (Former Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management, Director of the Institute for Brand and Competitiveness Strategy Research) said that the completion of the Vietnam Exhibition Center right before the 80th anniversary of National Day is of great significance.
“For a country that is very open and deeply integrated, having such a center meets the needs of Vietnam in the new era. This project also has a very high symbolic meaning, demonstrating Vietnam's position and ability to connect with the world,” he assessed.
A strong private sector creates a launching pad for the economy to take off.
Economist Vo Tri Thanh believes that to carry out projects at lightning speed, one must first have an effective management model, the ability to master technology, and a determined team.
“Vingroup is a living testament to the private sector’s infrastructure deployment capacity in the new context – fast, efficient and ensuring quality,” he said.
Going deeper into the analysis, expert Pham Chi Lan pointed out that the difference lies in the development motivation and operating mechanism of the private sector. Private enterprises truly understand that time is money, they work with their own capital, so each day of construction must be optimized in terms of cost, progress and efficiency. They are also completely proactive in making decisions, mobilizing resources, and coordinating with related parties to achieve the final goal.
“State-owned enterprises are often constrained by budgetary resources, complicated procedures, and the dispersion of responsibilities among many related agencies. Meanwhile, private enterprises like Vingroup have a strong motivation to calculate carefully from the beginning and optimize each stage to achieve the fastest progress,” Ms. Lan analyzed.
Not only flexible in management and operation, private enterprises also have the ability to mobilize and allocate outstanding resources. With Vingroup, when needed, they can focus maximum resources to complete a strategic project. As in the case of the Vietnam Exhibition Center, human resources, finance, technology and partners are mobilized synchronously, closely coordinated, and under high pressure to reach the finish line on time.
In addition, discipline is also a key factor that creates advantages for the private sector. If private enterprises are behind schedule, over budget, or have poor quality, they will immediately suffer losses in terms of money, reputation, and long-term development opportunities.
From the VinFast factory to the Vietnam Exhibition Center, Vingroup has demonstrated the private sector's infrastructure deployment capacity: fast, efficient and quality assured.
From the perspective of urban planning, Architect Tran Ngoc Chinh (Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association) affirmed that in recent times, the private sector has demonstrated its capacity in developing key infrastructure projects. The projects have been implemented quickly and decisively, especially without exceeding capital, demonstrating the spirit of fighting waste and saving huge resources for the country.
The success of Vingroup and many leading private enterprises with airport and highway projects has opened a clear and effective direction for infrastructure socialization.
"Private enterprises are capable of performing important tasks to build the nation," Mr. Chinh believes.
From the first car models to the world's Top 10 exhibition, Vingroup has proven that speed is not recklessness, but a real ability - built on a superior management model, a desire to lead and a spirit of constant innovation. When the private sector is strong enough, the country will have more launching pads to take off and enter a new era with high speed and sustainable internal strength.
