From June 10-12, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the 18th Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) took place with the theme "Raising public awareness of the rights and contributions of persons with disabilities in social development, towards the Second World Summit on Social Development".
The conference was attended by many Ministers and Deputy Ministers of member countries, along with many representatives of international organizations and non- governmental organizations.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed affirmed that promoting equality and expanding opportunities for people with disabilities is always a high priority on the UN agenda.
Despite this, people with disabilities around the world continue to face many difficulties and inequalities in accessto education , employment, health and technology; all disability-related indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are behind schedule.
During the discussion, all countries affirmed that the CRPD Convention is an extremely important document, laying the foundation for global cooperation in ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities; emphasizing that the Second World Summit for Social Development is an opportunity to further strengthen international cooperation in this field.

Speaking at the conference, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, affirmed Vietnam's strong commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, as demonstrated through the promulgated policy and legal documents, including the 2010 Law on Persons with Disabilities and the ratification of the CRPD Convention in 2014.
Sharing about the efforts and achievements in this field, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen emphasized that Vietnam has supported more than 1.6 million people with severe disabilities to receive monthly social allowances and 96% of people with disabilities have health insurance; expanded inclusive and specialized education with the rate of children with disabilities attending school reaching 65%, standardized sign language and Braille nationwide; created conditions for 4 million people with disabilities to participate in the workforce through vocational training and employment support programs.
Emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in this field, Vietnam affirmed its readiness to cooperate with all countries and relevant organizations to further ensure the rights of persons with disabilities, towards a fair, self-reliant, inclusive society where no one is left behind.
