Applying technology in theater: Difficulty still limits intelligence!

Applying modern technology to stage art helps activate multiple senses, stimulates the audience's imagination, thereby bringing high efficiency to the work. This is an inevitable trend of stage in general. Vietnamese stage is no exception. However, in order for the application of technology to serve the creation of stage art to achieve the desired results, there are still many issues to discuss.

Recently, the Central Circus of the Vietnam Circus Federation has become a favorite destination for a large number of audiences. It is no longer a strange phenomenon for the circus to serve 3-4 shows/day. Notably, many of the audiences are adults and teenagers. The circus stage is no longer considered a "territory" only for children. This result is the result of the Vietnam Circus Federation's many efforts in innovating its performance programs, aiming to serve a diverse audience.

According to People's Artist Tong Toan Thang, Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation, the Central Circus has been and is a place with favorable conditions for artists and circus organizers to create many modern circus acts and programs, meeting the enjoyment needs of the audience. However, the male artist also said that the application of modern technology to the stage, lighting, and images in the circus is still limited. This is extremely regrettable.

Applying modern technology makes the stage more vivid.

With the characteristics of a synthetic art form, circus art can be combined with many other art forms, in which the application of sound and light technology contributes to enhancing the experience for the audience. Most circus countries in the world have applied technology to perform arts in general and art in particular. Modern circus stages have used new equipment for high-quality sound, surround sound systems, multi-dimensional lighting technology, image projection technology (hologram, mapping, 3D images creating spatial effects ...), supporting and creating highly entertaining synthetic circus art products.

At the Central Circus, the Vietnam Circus Federation has also boldly invested in a number of acts that apply automatic technology combined with lighting, water spraying systems, creating effects combined with sound, bringing attraction and surprise to the audience. However, because it is not synchronized with the general stage equipment, the act is still limited.

The Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation said that equipment such as soundproofing systems and lighting installation systems according to the design of the Central Circus in the 90s of the last century are no longer suitable. The lighting system provided is not of sufficient capacity. The Federation has upgraded and repaired many times but due to lack of synchronization, the efficiency is not high. The National Circus Festival and International Circus Festival competitions still have to hire reinforcements for sound and lighting in large numbers. In addition, most of the staff and technicians operating sound and lighting at the elementary level, taking advantage of converting human resources from artists who are no longer performing to attend short-term courses on sound and lighting, are only suitable for traditional circus programs, using simple techniques, not meeting the requirements of highly theatrical programs. Currently, the Federation is lacking lighting and sound directors.

In fact, the difficulties of the Vietnam Circus Federation are not unique. Regarding the Cai Luong stage, specifically the Vietnam Cai Luong Theater, Dr. People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien, Director of the Vietnam Cai Luong Theater, said that the application of technology on the theater stage in recent years has only stopped at LED screens; projector screens; cold smoke. However, these technologies have also made the works more beautiful, more interesting, creating many new sensations as well as attractiveness for the audience.

If in the past, the stage space and time were expressed through the backdrop painted by the artist on fabric and were completely static images, now with the use of LED screens and projectors, the artist will design more realistic images, more diverse forms and dynamic images. The visual variations that are implemented have better supported the dramatic actions and the performance of the artist. But the drawback is that the rental cost of these devices is very high, creating a burden on the revenue and expenditures for the performance organization. The passivity of the technical team, sometimes technical problems greatly affect the performance. This is a common difficulty of many traditional theater units today.

According to Dr. People's Artist Trieu Trung Kien, with traditional art forms, innovation and reform to promote and contribute to preserving ancient capital is extremely necessary. Thus, applying modern technology is a must. Modern technology and the right creative thinking will make traditional art closer and more accessible to modern audiences, but the application of modern technology also gives rise to many difficulties and concerns that need to be resolved promptly.

specifically, there is a need for new performance organization methods that contribute to finding the key to balancing revenue and expenditure, organizing objectives so that works can have a long life, serving more art-loving audiences. Leaders at all levels need to invest in building modern cultural and artistic institutions on par with advanced countries in the world. This is a prerequisite to foster the creativity of artists to create top-notch works, of real quality and meet the needs of viewers.

Sharing the same viewpoint with the artists but looking specifically at the stage design perspective, People's Artist Doan Bang, Deputy Director of the Youth Theater, proposed many solutions, including updating the training program. There should be a mechanism requiring students who are trained abroad with State scholarships to return to work at domestic art units for at least 5 years after graduation. Training human resources to meet practical requirements. Investing in a modern infrastructure system and inviting leading experts from countries with developed entertainment industries to train and exchange with Vietnamese artists and engineers on skills in using and creating on a high-tech platform.
