In a recent attack, Ukraine targeted Russian S-400 long-range air defense systems, which are being used to defend the Crimean Peninsula. Photo: @Головне управління Ѐозвідки MO UCKN. Footage released by the Kiev-based Main Intelligence Directorate shows the destruction of two 92H2E multifunctional fire control radars, two 91H6E long-range surveillance radars and a surface-to-air missile complex. "These radars are the eyes of the enemy's S-400 long-range air defense system," the Ukrainian General Intelligence Directorate said. Photo: @Golovsky radio station MO Ukrain. "Without them, Russian air defense systems would not work," the Ukrainian General Intelligence Directorate added. Photo: @Головне управління Ѐозвідки MO UCKN. The Ukrainian General Intelligence Directorate also stressed that such attacks are part of a broader strategy aimed at destroying Russian detection and engagement systems in the hotly contested territories. Systems like the S-400 have been heavily concentrated in Crimea since the late 2010s, when the disputed peninsula was claimed by both Moscow and Kiev, while countries across the Western world backed Ukraine's claim. On November 23, 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces began attacks on Russian territory with US-supplied ATACMS ballistic missiles, destroying two S-400 system launchers in Russia's Kursk region. Two months later, a successful attack disabled a 92N6 detection radar near the frontline city of Belgorod in Kursk. Photo: @Aviacionline. Russia’s limited investments in tactical aviation have led to a particularly high reliance on ground-based air defense systems to counter enemy air power, making the destruction of the S-400 (which is the backbone of the air defense network) particularly detrimental to Russia’s security. In addition to using Western satellites to aid in targeting, Ukraine has also benefited from significant electronic intelligence on Russian air defense systems gathered from aircraft operating around the region, most notably including F-35 fighter jets deployed in Eastern Europe. Other surveillance assets such as E-3 AEW&C systems and RQ-4A Global Hawk drones also maintain a significant presence around Ukraine and the Black Sea. Photo: @ Air Force Academy.
