Surprises at top schools
Ly Tu Trong High School (Nha Trang Ward) is a top high school in the province, ranking first in terms of admission scores for grade 10 among all public high schools almost every year. However, this year, this school has a very low admission score of 9 points (average of 3 points/subject). Other famous schools also have low admission scores such as: Nguyen Van Troi High School (Nha Trang Ward) has only a admission score of 11.5 points; Nguyen Trai High School (Ninh Hoa Ward) 8.5 points; Phan Boi Chau High School (Cam Ranh Ward) 11 points... Meanwhile, the school with the highest admission score (first choice) is Ha Huy Tap High School (Tay Nha Trang Ward) 16.25 points, followed by Pham Van Dong High School (Nha Trang Ward) 16 points, Hoang Van Thu High School (Bac Nha Trang Ward) 15.25 points.

According to Mr. Do Huu Quynh - Deputy Director of the Departmentof Education and Training, the reason why the top schools have low admission scores is because the number of applicants is lower than the quota. Specifically, Ly Tu Trong High School has 675 enrollment quotas for grade 10 but only 621 candidates participate in the entrance exam (of which 8 candidates are admitted directly, 446 candidates register their first choice directly at the school, 167 candidates register for the exam at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted but are not admitted to the specialized school with their first choice to apply to Ly Tu Trong High School). With the same quota, Nguyen Van Troi High School only has 619 candidates applying. Nguyen Trai High School only has 436 candidates applying while the quota is 450. Phan Boi Chau High School only has 371 candidates applying out of a total of 405 quotas.
In contrast to the above schools, some schools have high admission scores due to the large number of students registering for admission, such as: Pham Van Dong High School (770 candidates/585 targets); Hoang Van Thu High School (882 candidates/585 targets); Ha Huy Tap High School (799 candidates/495 targets)... Some candidates who were just a few points short of passing these schools could not help but regret because that score was enough to pass the top schools. The leaders of the Department of Education and Training said that during the registration period, some candidates left their second choice blank because they thought that the top schools would take high scores, making it difficult to consider their second choice. Meanwhile, the regulations allow a school to consider up to 30% of the quota for the second choice so that candidates have more chances to pass the public school. This is also one of the reasons why top schools do not have enough enrollment quotas and have to admit some students with low scores.
Need to look at and evaluate comprehensively
After the benchmark scores were announced, many opinions expressed concern about the quality of high school entrance exams in general and some schools in particular. According to Mr. Do Huu Quynh, the benchmark score is only a reference factor, not the only measure to evaluate the quality of a school's entrance exam. Parents and students need to look at the overall score distribution. This year, the percentage of 10th grade entrance exams in the province with average scores or higher is still at a positive level compared to previous years, in which Literature is over 83.1%, Math is over 70.4%, English is 52.6%.

In terms of score distribution, Ly Tu Trong High School still leads in the number of candidates with high scores. The highest admission score of this school is 28.5 points (2 students). At the level of 24 to 28.25 points, the school has 440 students; from 21 to 23.75 points, there are 150 students. Level 9 points has only 1 student; the next points are 13 points, 14 points, 15.25 points, ... each level also has only 1 student.
For Nguyen Van Troi High School, the candidate with the highest admission score is 28 points; 147 students have scores from 24 to 27.5; 267 students have scores from 21 to 23.75; and only a few students have scores from 11.5 to 15. At Nguyen Trai High School, the highest admission score is 27.75 points (4 students); 108 students have scores from 24 to 27.5; 133 students have scores from 21 to 23.75; and only a few students have scores from 8.5 to 15...
Talking to reporters about some opinions that the floor score should be regulated for some top schools to ensure input quality, Mr. Do Huu Quynh said: “This year, the admission method is basically the same, the fact that top schools have lower admission scores than some schools has happened in the past few school years, when candidates were worried about competing with many good students and avoided registering for these schools. However, the situation of unusually low admission scores and lower than many schools is worth noting. However, setting floor scores for some schools needs to be carefully considered, based on monitoring, surveying, analyzing specific data and consulting the Provincial People's Committee before making any adjustments.”
For some schools in remote, isolated and disadvantaged areas, the number of applicants is less than the target, which has been the case for many years, and the benchmark scores of these schools are among the bottom every year. This year, Nguyen Du High School ( Bac Ninh Hoa Commune) has the lowest benchmark score in the province of 5 points, but is still short of 44 students compared to the target; To Van On High School (Tu Bong Commune) has a benchmark score of 6.5 points, but is still short of 13 students; Ton Duc Thang High School (Nam Ninh Hoa Commune) has a benchmark score of 6.5 points, but is still short of 31 students...
The Department of Education and Training said that the department did not propose a plan to recruit additional students for some schools that are still short of their quotas. The fact that some schools are short of a few dozen students does not significantly affect the arrangement of classes and the organization of teaching, because the average number of students per class is only reduced by 1 to 3 students (according to regulations, the maximum number of students per class does not exceed 45 students). In the case of students from the old Ninh Thuan province who move with their parents to work in the wards of Nha Trang, Bac Nha Trang, Nam Nha Trang, Tay Nha Trang and want to register for admission to schools in these wards, the schools will have more favorable conditions to receive them.
