On November 13, Dr. Mai Hoa, Head of the Department of General Surgery, Thu Duc City Hospital (HCMC), said that immediately after being admitted, the patient was examined and performed paraclinical and endoscopic intervention to stop the bleeding, but because the ulcer was deep and ate into the blood vessels causing massive bleeding, the doctor decided to perform gastric surgery to stop the bleeding.

During the surgery, the doctor observed a 1.5 cm ulcer located at the posterior surface of the gastric antrum, invading the gastroduodenal artery and the anterior surface of the pancreas, causing bleeding. Assessing the patient's critical condition, the surgical team decided to remove the lower part of the stomach to control the bleeding. After surgery, the patient received special, comprehensive care, and multidisciplinary consultation to support the general condition.

"The patient can now eat orally, take care of himself, and the surgical wound is healing well. He is expected to be discharged about 9 days after surgery," said Dr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, who directly cared for and treated the patient.

Bleeding stomach ulcers

Ms. V., the patient's mother, said that at home, M. often had irregular eating habits, skipped meals frequently, and stayed up late to study. Occasionally, she complained of abdominal pain, but it was only fleeting, so the family did not pay attention.

About a month ago, the pain became worse, the patient vomited blood, so he was taken to a nearby hospital for endoscopy and diagnosed with gastric ulcer causing bleeding complications. After treatment, the condition did not improve, so the family asked to transfer to Thu Duc City Hospital for treatment.

Doctor Mai Hoa said that if gastric and duodenal ulcers are not diagnosed and treated early, they will lead to life-threatening complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation causing peritonitis, infection, and poisoning.

"Currently, duodenal ulcers are tending to be younger in age due to stress, pressure from studying and working, the habit of staying up late, unscientific eating (eating at irregular hours, eating a lot of sour, spicy foods...) causing stomach and duodenal ulcers, very dangerous complications," the doctor shared.

When there are signs of epigastric pain, belching, prolonged heartburn, etc., patients need to go to a medical facility for examination to detect early gastric and duodenal ulcers, to treat and avoid dangerous complications such as ulcer perforation, gastric bleeding, cancer, etc.
