Since 2024, there have been rumors that Google is preparing to merge ChromeOS into Android. Now, things are clearer through the revelation of a senior leader at Google.
Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, asked TechRadar editor Lance Ulanoff why he uses a MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, and iPhone to learn how to manage these devices. After answering, he revealed that Google will merge ChromeOS and Android into one.
“I asked because we were going to combine ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, I was very interested in how people were using laptops and what they were doing,” Samat said.
This is the most official, clear information yet about Google's plan to merge its computer operating system into Android.
There’s still a lot that’s unknown. But Samat’s question to Ulanoff suggests that Google is looking to improve the multi-device experience across its ecosystem.
In early 2024, Google announced that it would merge parts of the Android kernel into ChromeOS to integrate AI faster. It seems likely that the company will continue this process and completely merge ChromeOS into Android.
If that happens, Google will ship Chromebooks running a unified operating system, with better compatibility with Android apps and deeper integration with Android phones.
In recent releases, Google has added some desktop-like features to Android.
The first quarterly update to Android 16 later this year will significantly improve the experience, adding a desktop mode that allows multi-window multitasking on external displays. The feature will also come to tablets, making them a viable PC replacement.
However, it could be years before Google completes the merger of ChromeOS with Android, and don’t expect to hear anything about that at the Pixel 10 announcement event, which is expected to take place in mid-August.
