Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets with European Union leaders

According to the special correspondent of VNA, on June 9, on the occasion of attending the 3rd United Nations Summit on Oceans in Nice, France, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had 2 meetings with European Union (EU) leaders, including a working meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Costa and a brief meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

At the meetings, the Prime Minister expressed his belief that under the leadership of Mr. Antonio Costa and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, the EU ship will overcome the waves and develop better.

The leaders of the European Council and Commission affirmed that the EU highly values its relations with Vietnam and shares the desire to upgrade the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Regarding the priorities of Vietnam - EU relations in the coming time, the Prime Minister suggested that the two sides should focus on upgrading Vietnam - EU relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; continue to promote the ratification of the EVIPA Agreement; and propose that the EC consider removing the IUU yellow card for Vietnamese seafood.

The Prime Minister also stated that the EU needs to strengthen relations with Southeast Asia, the most populous, young, and dynamically growing region in the world with great development potential; Vietnam is ready to act as a bridge for the EU to strengthen relations with Southeast Asia.

Leaders of the European Council and Commission agreed to coordinate to promote bilateral cooperation priorities mentioned by the Prime Minister, affirming that in the near future, more EU members will ratify the EVIPA.

In the context of the uncertain world and regional situation, the two sides agreed to strengthen coordination to promote multilateral cooperation.

EU leaders shared that the EU is currently prioritizing strengthening relations with ASEAN, including Vietnam; sharing the EU's policy of strengthening cooperation with countries and regions, promoting a multipolar situation, and avoiding confrontation. With that goal, the EU is organizing a series of Summits with countries and regions, including ASEAN.

Discussing the international and regional situation, EU leaders highly appreciated Vietnam's constructive approach to the issue of peace and security, Vietnam's stance on upholding the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, including resolving disputes by peaceful means, respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, and supporting ASEAN's stance on the East Sea.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister invited the President of the European Council and Commission and EU leaders to visit Vietnam at a suitable time. EU leaders affirmed that they will soon arrange to visit Vietnam.
