17-year-old girl recovers after surgery to remove foreign object.

Through investigation, it was found that this female patient had a habit of picking her teeth and holding a toothpick in her mouth after eating. A week before being hospitalized, T had abdominal pain accompanied by fever, then the abdominal pain increased significantly, and the fever was high. Initially, the patient was diagnosed with adnexitis and went to the Central Obstetrics Hospital for examination. Here, the patient underwent an ultrasound and a foreign object was discovered in her abdomen. After that, the patient was transferred to the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital.

At the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital, T was examined by doctors, and a CT scan showed a 3cm foreign object in the abdomen and a lot of pus in the abdomen. Immediately, the patient was quickly operated on by doctors using laparoscopic surgery combined with open surgery, removing a 3cm long, double-pointed bamboo toothpick. Next, the doctors proceeded to suture the intestinal perforation, wash away the pus and digestive fluid in the abdomen.

Currently, after surgery, the patient's condition is temporarily stable. Specialist II Doctor Le Nhat Huy, Deputy Director of the Center for Colorectal and Perineal Surgery (Viet-German Friendship Hospital) said that patient T came to the hospital with a severe abdominal infection. If left for a long time, it will cause a very serious infection and poisoning of the whole body. However, fortunately, the patient is in good health and has no underlying diseases, so the recovery time is faster.

Previously, swallowing foreign objects such as bamboo toothpicks often happened to the elderly, who often had the habit of holding toothpicks in their mouths after eating, lying down to watch TV and falling asleep. This is also a rare case of swallowing bamboo toothpicks in a young person that the hospital received.
