Painter Le Thiet Cuong passed away at the age of 63

Painter Le Thiet Cuong, a veteran curator and art critic, passed away at the age of 63 at his home (Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi) on the evening of July 17 after a period of battling a rare cancer.

Painter Le Thiet Cuong was born in 1962, the son of screenwriter and poet Le Nguyen and cameraman Do Phuong Thao. He studied at the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema from 1985 to 1990. He has spent more than 30 years pursuing the minimalist painting style, practicing and experimenting through many different branches.

Since 1990, artist Le Thiet Cuong has been working as a freelance artist in Hanoi. During his painting career, artist Le Thiet Cuong has had 26 solo exhibitions at home and abroad since 1991, along with many group exhibitions.

He also won the Good Design Award (Japan) in 2003-2004 and 2005-2006.

Painter Le Thiet Cuong also has paintings in collections at museums in Singapore, Belgium, and Vietnam.

Besides his artistic activities, painter Le Thiet Cuong is also a deep researcher and knowledgeable in many other fields, such as Buddhism, Eastern Philosophy, literature, architecture, design...

In addition to curating and organizing exhibitions for many famous artists, painter Le Thiet Cuong also writes books and illustrates books for many artists he admires, such as People's Artist Dao Trong Khanh, critic Nguyen Thuy Kha, writer Nguyen Huy Thiep...

Recently, in early June, artist Le Thiet Cuong released the book “Talking with Painting” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gallery39, a solo art exhibition at his home. The book includes 70 articles about authors, works of art, sculptures, and ceramics, which have been published in newspapers and magazines since 2000.

Previously, in August 2024, artist Le Thiet Cuong also introduced the collection of essays "House and People", sharing small stories from "house stories" to convey stories about people, landscapes, stories of a time and more broadly, finally, stories about culture and national stories.
