Before this match, the two teams had met twice, at the AVC Nations Cup and the first round of the SEA V.League. In those times, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team had moments of good play to drag the match into set 5. After that, they unfortunately collapsed, losing 2-3.
In the match on the evening of July 17, Indonesia had an even greater advantage as they were playing at home. The Vietnamese men's volleyball team faced many difficulties against a taller, more skilled opponent who was enthusiastically cheered on.
At the start of set 1, coach Tran Dinh Tien made some surprising changes. Setter Van Duy was replaced by Cong Duc, while middle blocker The Khai was replaced by Thanh Hai. The whole team started off with excitement thanks to good blocks to lead 3-0.
But Indonesia, with high-jumping hitters like Rivan Nurmulki and Boy Arnez Arabi, tied the score at 3-3. The home team's dangerous serves once again made the Vietnamese team falter. Indonesia won 25-18 in set 1.
In set 2, coach Tran Dinh Tien made another surprising adjustment. This time, opposite setter Van Hiep was given a chance after recovering from injury. Striker Xuan Truong also had more time to participate.
This was the set where Van Hiep shone, contributing to the 25-22 victory. However, Indonesia did not lose any more sets. Their tall players prevented the Vietnamese team from having any more surprising moments. The home team continued to win 25-22, 25-15 in the next two sets to win 3-1 overall.
With this result, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team has received a total loss against Indonesia this year. After 2 matches in the second round of SEA V.League, coach Tran Dinh Tien's team has a record of 1 win and 1 loss.
