In late May and early June, right at the lychee season in the country's "capitals", seedless lychees from China suddenly flooded in and "stormed" the domestic online market. Notably, this type of lychee was advertised by many stores at extremely expensive prices, up to 600,000-700,000 VND/kg and customers had to pre-order to get the goods.
After seedless lychees, in late June and early July, Chinese areca plums flooded the Vietnamese market. Unlike the previous cheap Chinese plums, areca plums are sold for 450,000 VND/kg, 15-20 times more expensive than Vietnamese VIP plums. The smaller areca plums cost 200,000-250,000 VND/kg.
"However, areca plums are still constantly out of stock. Like today, there were dozens of customers asking to buy areca plums but there were no products," Ms. Ho Thi Ngoc Mai - owner of a fruit shop in Hoang Liet ( Hanoi ) told PV VietNamNet.
Ms. Mai said that Mong Tu plum (China) is a fairly new product in the Vietnamese market. The plum is yellow-green, has a crunchy, sweet and sour taste, is juicy and has no seeds. VIP size plum, 1kg has about 10-12 fruits, she is selling it for 450,000 VND/kg.
She has been importing this type of Chinese plum for sale since the second half of June. Every 2-3 days, there is a shipment of plums, but they are all "sold out", despite the high price.
"There was a trip with 200kg of goods, I only had enough to pay for the order, the remaining goods were sold out in one morning," Ms. Mai added.
Ms. Ngo Thi Nhung, a saleswoman at an agricultural product store in Kim Lien ward (Hanoi), admitted that Chinese plums are selling very well at the store.
Three days ago, the store imported the first batch of medium-sized areca plums for sale at 250,000 VND/kg. Initially, the store planned to test the market reaction, so it only imported 500kg. As a result, after more than a day of advertising, customers rushed to close orders, and the plums were only enough to pay for about 1/3 of the orders.
After that, the store had to import tons of Chinese plums to pay for the customer's order.
According to Ms. But, there are many types of Chinese plums, imported and sold in large quantities in the domestic market, but most types of Chinese plums are cheap.
"As for areca plums, it belongs to the high-end fruit segment, even more expensive than American cherries. This plum season only lasts for a little over a month. This year, areca plums have a good harvest, so the store imports them to sell," Ms. Nhung shared.
According to fruit shop owners, areca plum is the most expensive Chinese fruit in the Vietnamese market. Not to mention, most shops only accept pre-orders and do not have them in stock. Therefore, customers who want to eat them usually have to order 1-2 days in advance.
