Although the durian harvest season has begun, the atmosphere in durian growing areas in the communes of Khanh Son, Tay Khanh Son, and Dong Khanh Son is quite quiet. Local durian growers are worried about the erratic weather and the risk of price drops compared to the previous crop.

Traders buy at low prices

Currently, some Ri6 durian gardens in Tay Khanh Son commune have begun to have ripe, fallen fruit, but there are not many traders walking around the garden to set prices like at the beginning of last year's crop. Visiting the garden of 400 Ri6 durian trees of Mr. Nguyen Van Bon's family in Cam Khanh village (Tay Khanh Son commune), we were told by him: "My family's durian garden is estimated to harvest about 70 tons of fruit this season. If at this time last year, 3-4 traders came to the garden every day to set prices, this year there are only a few traders coming to see. Because the durian is old, I have set the selling price for traders at 32,000 VND/kg, a decrease of 15,000 VND/kg compared to last year."

Mr. Nguyen Tri Dung - Vice Chairman of Tay Khanh Son Commune People's Committee said: "Durian is the main crop of the locality. Thanks to durian cultivation, in recent years, many households in the commune have risen to have a prosperous life, many ethnic minority households in the area have also escaped poverty thanks to this crop. Currently, the commune has 1,058 hectares of durian, of which about 70% of the area is in the business period; the estimated yield is about 12 tons/ha. The consumption of durian this year is not as vibrant as in previous years, the purchase price at the beginning of the season has decreased sharply compared to the previous crop".

Mr. Mau Nguyen's family (in Khanh Son commune) grows 70 Monthong durian trees, expecting to harvest about 10 tons of fruit. Recently, traders came to see the fruit and offered a purchase price of VND55,000/kg, a decrease of VND20,000/kg compared to last year. "Durian trees are difficult to care for, requiring high techniques and a lot of effort. This year, the weather is erratic, durian farmers have to invest more in fertilizer and pesticides to preserve the trees and fruit, so with this selling price, the profit is much lower than previous crops," said Mr. Nguyen.

Growers are worried

Talking to some durian traders, we learned that this year, traders are offering lower purchase prices than last year for many reasons. In addition to the more difficult consumption market, the impact of heavy rains has made the durian fruit less beautiful, and the quality has also been affected compared to previous crops. Currently, traders mainly buy Ri6 durian, while Monthong durian, which bears fruit later, will have to wait a little longer before they start buying.

In Dong Khanh Son commune, there are 577 hectares of durian, of which 343 hectares are bearing fruit, with an estimated average yield of about 11 tons/ha. Never before have durian growers here encountered so many difficulties due to the impact of the weather as this year. Recent heavy rains have caused many durian trees to break branches and lose fruit. Not only that, diseases such as gummosis, mealybugs, etc. have also appeared, making durian care even more costly and increasing production costs. Durian is a crop that brings high economic value to farmers, but is currently greatly affected by unfavorable weather, causing many gardeners to worry about productivity and quality. Currently, at the beginning of the harvest season, farmers are restless because prices have dropped sharply compared to the beginning of the harvest season last year.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dong - Chairman of Khanh Son Commune People's Committee said: "In the whole commune, there are 1,279 hectares of durian, of which 780 hectares are bearing fruit, mainly Ri6 varieties accounting for about 20% of the area, Monthong accounting for 65% of the area, the remaining are Chin Hoa and Musang King varieties. It is expected that this year's durian season, farmers in the commune will harvest about 9,000 tons of durian of all kinds. This year, the weather has been unusual, with heavy rain during flowering and fruit setting, which has affected the yield. Not only that, recently, when the durian trees are producing rice and growing ripe fruit, there has been a lot of rain, which will affect the quality. Hopefully, in the coming time, there will be more sunshine, at that time, the quality of durian will be higher, and the purchase price will also increase."
