Besiktas parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the 2025/26 season had just begun. |
On the morning of August 29, Solskjaer was fired after Besiktas lost 0-1 to Lausanne Sport, in the second leg of the final play-off round of the 2025/26 Conference League. This decision was made just minutes after Besiktas missed the opportunity to participate in European cup competitions this season.
In an official statement, Besiktas said: “The contract with coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated by decision at the board meeting. After the meeting, chairman Serdal Adali thanked Solskjaer for his contributions to the present.”
This marks the end of Solskjaer's eight-month stint in Türkiye. Solskjaer was appointed head coach of Besiktas in January and led the team to a commendable fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig last season.
However, defeat to Lausanne in the Conference League play-off round, followed by elimination from the Europa League play-off round by Shakhtar Donetsk – became the last straw for the Besiktas board.
Under Solskjaer, Besiktas have not been doing too badly domestically. However, their poor form in European competitions, especially the defeat to Lausanne – a team rated much lower – has caused the Norwegian coach to lose credibility.
