Mourinho was fired

On the afternoon of August 29 (Hanoi time), Jose Mourinho was officially fired by Fenerbahce after the Turkish team failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Mourinho lost his job when his performance in Türkiye failed to meet expectations.

"From this moment on, Jose Mourinho no longer continues to hold the position of head coach of the team. We thank him for his contributions and wish him success in the future," Fenerbahce's statement said.

Fenerbahce confirmed the sacking of the Portuguese coach after the club lost 0-1 to Benfica on August 28. This is the second consecutive season that Mourinho has failed to help Fenerbahce qualify for the Champions League.

Last August, the Turkish representative also fell in the play-off round against Lille. This season, the reigning Super Lig runner-up was defeated by Benfica in the match that decided the ticket to the most prestigious European cup tournament worth 50 million euros.

The 62-year-old was appointed Fenerbahce manager in 2024, guiding the team to second place in the Super Lig, 11 points behind champions Galatasaray. However, Fenerbahce were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the National Cup and lost to Rangers in the last 16 of the Europa League.

During a coaching career spanning more than two decades, Mourinho won 26 major trophies, including the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, and league titles with Chelsea and Real Madrid. Before moving to Türkiye, he led AS Roma to their first European title in 61 years, winning the Europa Conference League in 2022. However, the following season, Roma lost the Europa League final to Sevilla on penalties.
