Pepper price today August 31 in the world market

In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on August 30 (local time) as follows:

Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $7,216 per tonne. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,028 per tonne.

Brazilian ASTA black pepper price increased sharply compared to yesterday at 6,700 USD/ton (up 1.04%).

Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,600/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $12,800/ton.

Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,240 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,370 USD/ton.

In addition, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,150/ton.

World pepper prices ended August with many optimistic signals. Prices in all major producing countries did not decrease. Specifically, domestic and export pepper prices in India remained stable for two consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, Indonesia recorded price increases in both markets.

The market upturn was driven by strong import demand from key markets such as China, the EU, the US and the Middle East, a new report from Ptexim said.

In Brazil, pepper output in 2024 is unlikely to reach initial expectations due to two main reasons: labor shortage and uneven fruit ripening.

Still, strong exports and exchange rate volatility are supporting prices. The state of Espírito Santo, the largest pepper growing region, has begun its second harvest. Notably, Brazil has exported 61% of its projected annual output in the first seven months of the year.

Brazilian pepper prices have continued to rise steadily over the past two to three weeks despite two factors: the harvest season and the US imposing a 50% reciprocal tax. The reason is that farmers are not under pressure to sell quickly and the labor shortage is getting worse.

In Indonesia, volatile weather is forecast to reduce yields by 5-10% in 2025, which would be the fourth consecutive year of yield declines. Pest pressure that has persisted since 2021 has not been overcome, along with a shrinking pepper growing area as farmers switch to coffee and durian.

Ptexim commented that tight global supply and high prices will help Indonesia's pepper exports remain stable, but the country needs to soon have solutions to improve its agricultural sector.

Another important factor supporting pepper prices is the strong recovery of coffee prices. When coffee prices increase, farmers tend to switch to coffee cultivation instead of pepper. This further reduces pepper supply. Moreover, labor and input costs for pepper cultivation are also increasing.

With complicated developments in Brazil and Indonesia, along with changes in global monetary policy, pepper prices are likely to maintain an upward trend at least until the end of the fourth quarter of 2025.
