Summary of 5 years of implementing the program to develop traditional medicine, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine

On July 4, the Government held an online conference to review 5 years of implementing the Traditional Medicine Development Program, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine issued under Decision No. 1893/QD-TTg dated December 25, 2019 of the Prime Minister. Comrade Le Thanh Long, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister chaired the conference. After 5 years of implementing the program, the system of traditional medicine facilities has been basically invested in and upgraded; the traditional medicine network at the grassroots level has been increasingly consolidated and developed; the quality of medicinal herbs and ingredients has been guaranteed, traditional medicine is diverse and highly effective; medical examination and treatment services in the field of traditional medicine have become increasingly rich and diversified, and quality has been improved.

As of June 2025, the central level has 5 traditional medicine hospitals; at the provincial and district levels, 92% of provinces and cities have traditional medicine hospitals. The ratio of traditional medicine hospital beds/total hospital beds accounts for 16%. The ratio of medical examinations using traditional medicine, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine to the total number of medical examinations accounts for 3.3%.

In Hung Yen, by early 2025, 100% of general hospitals will have a traditional medicine department; 100% of health stations will have medical staff specializing in traditional medicine. The rate of traditional medicine examination, combining traditional medicine and modern medicine to the total number of patients at the provincial and district levels will account for nearly 15%, and at the commune level, 25%. Attention will be paid to the conservation of medicinal gene sources.

At the conference, delegates discussed the results achieved as well as the reasons why some targets have not been achieved compared to the set goals. At the same time, they discussed solutions to implement the program in the coming time.

Concluding the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long requested that in the coming time, it is necessary to promote the propaganda about the role of traditional medicine, combine traditional medicine and modern medicine in medical examination, treatment and health care; complete the system of legal documents on traditional medicine associated with local authorities at 2 levels, develop strategies and programs to ensure medicinal material security. Increase investment in resources, arrange enough human resources for the traditional medicine management system from central to local levels; high-quality human resources in traditional medicine. Promote the development of medicinal materials, focusing on medicinal plants with high economic value associated with economic development; strengthen quality control, preservation of medicinal materials...
