Da Nang - Japan cooperation is increasingly deep, reliable and effective

At the recent conference "Meeting Japan in Da Nang 2025", many Japanese organizations and businesses affirmed that Da Nang continues to be the leading attractive investment destination in Vietnam.

Strategic investment destination

With a larger new development space, the new Da Nang city and increasingly open investment attraction policies, Da Nang is opening the door to strategic cooperation with Japan, contributing to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

According to the survey results of Japanese enterprises operating worldwide in 2024 by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Vietnam is the country where Japanese enterprises have the highest level of desire to expand their business among the 10 ASEAN countries. For the Asia and Oceania region, Vietnam ranks 3rd. This demonstrates the growth potential and attractiveness of the Vietnamese market.

Mr. Ozasa Haruhiko, Chief Representative of JETRO, said that there are currently two groups of industries that Japanese enterprises want to expand their investment in: domestic food production, food and beverage services, logistics, trade, and finance. According to Mr. Ozasa Haruhiko, Vietnam needs a more diversified and sustainable growth strategy. Specifically, promoting domestic consumption, public investment, regional economic development, and supporting start-ups for businesses.

Currently, many investors consider Da Nang city to be a very potential market in the fields of manufacturing, tourism and information technology, and is expected to become an important center in Japan-Vietnam cooperation. “We will continue to promote the role of an economic and trade bridge, focusing on supporting cooperation between Japanese and Vietnamese enterprises, including supporting creative start-up activities and developing high-quality human resources,” said Mr. Ozasa Haruhiko.

With its potential and advantages, Da Nang has become a strategic destination for many large Japanese corporations and enterprises, including AEON Mall Vietnam Co., Ltd. AEON Mall Da Nang (Thanh Khe Ward) is expected to open in the second quarter of 2026, with a total business area of ^{​​33,000m2} .

Mr. Okada Masaki, Director of AEON Mall Management Board (Central Region) said that Da Nang city is oriented to be a center of trade - services - finance - tourism - innovation in Southeast Asia. This is a development vision that is very suitable for AEON Mall's expansion strategy in Asia.

Furthermore, Da Nang is located in the center of the region, has open space, fast economic growth, and a young population. These are ideal factors for AEON Mall to develop large-scale projects. In particular, AEON Mall highly appreciates the city government in supporting investors, from the market research stage, accessing investment procedures to developing implementation plans. "We hope that the city government will increase regular dialogue with businesses and investors to promptly share and resolve difficulties," Mr. Okada Masaki suggested.

According to Mr. Hirayama Keiji, Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Da Nang (JCCID), in recent years, Da Nang city has always been an attractive investment destination for many foreign investors, including the Japanese business community. Many large Japanese projects are operating more and more effectively, contributing to strongly promoting the city's socio-economic development.

However, there are still barriers to investment procedures that have not been improved. Mr. Hirayama Keiji expressed that businesses have high expectations for the Da Nang City government to promote administrative procedure reform, shorten the process of implementing procedures related to granting investment licenses; create conditions and support businesses when they encounter difficulties.

Continue to be a trusted partner

On the bilateral level, up to now, Da Nang city has established friendly relations and implemented cooperation programs with more than 22 provinces and cities of Japan. Regarding economic cooperation, Japan is the leading country in terms of registered investment capital in the city with more than 1.14 billion USD in 261 projects.

In the tourism sector, Japan has always been a traditional and stable tourist market for Vietnam in general and Da Nang city in particular. In 2024, the number of Japanese visitors to Da Nang increased nearly 3 times compared to the same period in 2023.

Da Nang City is entering a new period of development with the goal of becoming a center for science and technology development, innovation, and high-quality services in the country. In that process, the city continues to identify Japan as one of its trusted partners, playing a special role in Da Nang's long-term strategic vision.

Because this is not only a foundation for sustainable cooperation built over many years, but also because Japan possesses values ​​compatible with Da Nang's new development orientation: sustainable development, high technology, quality human resources and an effective innovation ecosystem.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki emphasized that during the official visit to Vietnam in April 2025 by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, the two countries' senior leaders established a new pillar of cooperation in science, technology and innovation, demonstrating the sharing of long-term vision, common strategic interests, and the desire for innovation of both sides in the new era of development. Da Nang is the place where all the conditions converge to promote cooperation in these areas.

At the conference “Meeting Japan in Da Nang 2025”, Vice Chairwoman of the City People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi expressed that Da Nang city wishes to strengthen cooperation with Japanese partners in developing an innovation ecosystem, especially in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), microchips - semiconductors, smart cities, etc.

The city encourages R&D linkage programs, technology transfer, startup support, and investment in innovation centers. At the same time, it is ready to create conditions for Japanese enterprises and research institutes to test, deploy products, and connect with the startup ecosystem in Da Nang.

In addition, it is recommended that airlines, travel agencies and authorities of both sides coordinate to promote the opening of new flights between Da Nang and localities of Japan, thereby further promoting connectivity and developing the tourism sector.

The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee highly appreciated large Japanese corporations such as AEON Mall, Mikazuki Resort & Spa... continuing to choose Da Nang to expand their investment projects. At the same time, he welcomed the investment intention of Nikko Shoji Company for the entertainment and resort complex project in Da Nang. The city government will create all favorable conditions for the company to soon implement the project, including supporting the site survey, guiding the completion of investment and construction procedures in accordance with regulations.

With the companionship of Japanese partners, Da Nang not only realizes its development vision but also contributes to further deepening the Vietnam - Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the new era, towards a prosperous, sustainable and harmonious future between the two nations.
