Kazakhstan's Transport Ministry released an investigation report showing that it is likely that the Azerbaijan Airlines plane was damaged by the impact of "external objects" before it crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan on December 25, 2024.

CBS News cited a 53-page preliminary report released by the Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport on February 4, including images showing many holes in the passenger plane's fuselage.

However, the investigation results did not mention the cause behind the incident where the Embraer E190AR of Azerbaijan Airlines carrying 67 people from Baku (Azerbaijan) was supposed to go to Grozny (Chechen Republic of Russia) but diverted to Kazakhstan before crashing in the suburbs of the western city of Aktau.

The plane crash killed 38 of the 67 people on board.

According to the report, the pilot informed Grozny city air traffic control about the loss of GPS signal and shortly afterwards the plane became out of control.

The tail section of the aircraft also suffered multiple damage marks of various shapes and sizes, and "similar damage was found on the left engine and left wing of the aircraft," the report said.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly accused Russian air defense systems of accidentally shooting down Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243.

Initially, Russian officials gave several reasons for the crash, such as a bird strike. Later, Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized for the unfortunate accident, adding that Russian air defense systems were activated at the time to repel an attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from Ukraine.

However, so far no one has come forward to claim responsibility for the plane crash.

The Kremlin said Russia had opened a criminal investigation into the crash and had not yet released the results. Kazakhstan is leading the investigation because the plane crashed on its territory.
