President Putin personally attended the commissioning ceremony of the nuclear submarines Emperor Aleksandr III and Krasnoyarsk while visiting the city of Severodvinsk.

The flag-raising ceremony and commissioning of two new-generation nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy, Emperor Aleksandr III and Krasnoyarsk, took place today at the Sevmash shipyard in the northern city of Severodvinsk.

"Both submarines will soon be deployed to patrol the Pacific Ocean ," Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the event.

The Kremlin chief stressed that Russia will continue to strengthen its naval power by accelerating the production of warships and modernizing the existing forces. President Putin said that Moscow is building five more Yasen-M class nuclear attack submarines and plans to add three more Borei-A class strategic nuclear submarines in the coming years.

Aleksandr III is a Project 995A "Borei-A" submarine, 170 m long, 13.5 m wide, with a displacement of 24,000 tons, a maximum submerged speed of 56 km/h and unlimited range. Borei-A class submarines have significantly improved communication systems, reduced noise levels and increased crew living space.

The main weapons of the Borei-class submarines are 16 RSM-56 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, along with a variety of cruise missiles. Each missile carries 10 nuclear warheads and has a maximum range of about 10,000 km, allowing each Borei-class submarine to carry a maximum of 160 nuclear warheads.

Krasnoyarsk is the second ship of Project 855M "Yasen-M", an upgraded version of the latest generation of multi-purpose nuclear submarines developed by Russia. The submarine has a displacement of 13,800 tons, is capable of operating at a depth of 520 m, has an underwater speed of over 57 km/h, a crew of 64 people and can operate underwater for 100 consecutive days.

Project 855 and 855M submarines use a single-hull design similar to Western submarines, instead of the double-hull design of the traditional Soviet-era design. This allows the submarines to achieve higher speeds and reduce construction costs. The submarines are also equipped with modern sensor systems, capable of detecting underwater targets at a distance of up to 600 km.

Krasnoyarsk is equipped with 8 vertical launch tubes, carrying 32 P-800 Oniks supersonic anti-ship missiles or 40 3M-54 Kalibr anti-ship missiles, giving them the ability to confront entire enemy warship formations, along with 650 mm and 533 mm torpedo launchers.

The Russian Defense Ministry plans to receive at least eight Borei-class submarines, including three original and five Borei-A submarines, and 11 Yasen and Yasen-M class submarines.
