The ceremony of launching the new Russian naval ship was held on December 25, at the Northern Shipyard in St. Petersburg. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally attended the ceremony of raising the naval flag on the Admiral Golovko ship, while two other ships - the missile ship Naro-Fominsk and the minesweeper Lev Chernavin - were also attended online.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Vladimir Putin said the shipbuilding industry is booming in Russia as the country strives to further strengthen its naval capabilities.

“Currently, Russian shipyards have five destroyers, eight corvettes, 13 small missile boats and more than 50 other ships of various classes under construction at various stages,” Putin said.

“The commissioning of the newest ships is proof that the Russian shipbuilding industry is on the rise and is moving towards the serial production of warships of various types. This is a fundamental and important step in the revival and development of the Russian shipbuilding industry,” Putin added.

President Putin noted that "Admiral Golovko" has become the third ship of the "Admiral Gorshkov" class multipurpose destroyers and the first real serial-produced ship of this series.

“Such ships form the backbone of the fleet’s strike groups in distant seas and oceans. They are built using advanced technology and are equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles that have proven their high efficiency in combat,” President Putin said.

The Admiral Golovko destroyer is expected to carry the new Zircon hypersonic missile, introduced earlier this year, as standard ammunition for the ship. The destroyer will join the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet.

Earlier this month, Mr Putin oversaw the launch of two new fourth-generation nuclear submarines, built in the northern shipbuilding city of Severodvinsk. The Emperor Alexander III and Krasnoyarsk will join the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet.
