Waste incinerator of Nga Son Environmental Sanitation Joint Stock Company located in Nga Thang commune.
For many years, people in village 6, Nga Thang commune have been upset and worried about their health because they have to endure the stench of wastewater leaking from the garbage trucks of Nga Son Environmental Sanitation Joint Stock Company every day. Not only that, on rainy days, the source of wet waste when the waste treatment plant is operating, the burning smell and smoke from the large pipes spread into the air, affecting people's lives.
Frustrated by the environmental pollution caused by the foul smell and smoke from the process of collecting, transporting and burning waste by Nga Son Environmental Sanitation Joint Stock Company, the people of Nga Thang commune have repeatedly made petitions and reflected through voter meetings but have not been thoroughly handled. Mr. Ly Van Tien in village 6 said: “Every time the garbage collection and transportation vehicles from residential areas to the landfill, water leaks onto the street, causing a foul smell that affects the air in the village and the lives of the people. In addition, every time the West wind blows, the foul smell from the chimneys of the incinerator blows back towards the houses of the people, which is extremely unpleasant. I and the households in the village request the company to weld the holes in the garbage transport vehicles to avoid leakage of waste water onto the street. At the same time, on rainy days, the company should not burn garbage.”
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Mui in village 5 said: “The foul, burning smell is directly affecting the rural environment and the lives of our people, especially the elderly and children. Many times we have to close our doors and windows but still cannot avoid the foul smell and burning smoke.”
It is known that the waste treatment plant of Nga Son Environmental Sanitation Joint Stock Company was invested in construction in 2018 in Nga Thang commune. The plant has a designed capacity of 100 tons/day and night, including two furnaces with 4 incinerators. Here, waste is classified for treatment into 3 types: Screening humus for agricultural production; recycling of nylon, plastic, packaging; non-recyclable types are burned and buried. Using this method will take advantage of a large amount of organic humus for agricultural production. However, recently, due to the large amount of waste generated in the communes, there are days when the two furnaces operate at full capacity. On rainy days, the source of waste is wet, causing a burning smell and a lot of smoke, affecting the lives of local people.
Mr. Mai Sy Thong, manager of the waste treatment plant of Nga Son Environmental Sanitation Joint Stock Company, admitted that there was a situation where the garbage truck's tank was punctured, causing water to leak onto the village roads and alleys every time it was collected. The company has fixed the problem by welding the punctures. To deal with the problem of smoke spreading and affecting the surrounding people, the company will limit burning when the waste is still wet. However, the amount of waste generated in the communes is about 40 tons/day, if it is stopped for a day without burning, the landfill will be full, causing congestion and overload.
To solve the problem of environmental pollution caused by transportation and waste treatment in Nga Thang commune, local authorities and relevant agencies need to find solutions to mobilize more resources from businesses to upgrade investment in means of transport and build more modern waste treatment plants, applying new technologies that have less impact on the environment.
