After the 2024 high school graduation exam, Pham Thi Phuong (former student of Nguyen Tat Thanh High School, M'Drak district, Dak Lak ) became the valedictorian of block C of Dak Lak province with 29.5 points (literature 9.5; history: 10; geography: 10 points).

Phuong said that when she saw her exam scores, she was very surprised and had to check them over and over again to believe that they were true. For the history and geography exams, she had already checked her answers beforehand and knew her score. As for the literature exam, even though it was 11 pages long, she was still nervously waiting for her score.

"I like to read a lot of documents and analyze to clarify problems in subjects. Literature is my favorite subject. This is an emotional subject, so before taking any exam, I always read a favorite passage to inspire and help the writing flow more smoothly when doing the test," Phuong said modestly.

Phuong said that she was born and raised in a family where both her parents were farmers and had economic difficulties, so she was always determined to study. Her family lives in Krong A commune, M'Drak district, about 15km from the school, so she had to rent a house near the school to make it easier for her to study.

Knowing the results of the high school exam, besides the joy of having her efforts rewarded, the 18-year-old girl's heart was filled with many thoughts about the future.

Phuong has registered her wish to study at the Faculty of Literature Pedagogy, Tay Nguyen University to continue her dream of becoming a literature teacher, but she is very worried, afraid that studying will be a burden for her parents.

"My father has heart disease and cannot do heavy work. The cost of medicine is expensive. I also think a lot about whether to continue studying or find a job to help my family.

I'm trying to convince my parents to let me go to school and I will work part-time to pay for it. If I have to stop studying, I will be very sad and regretful," Phuong shared.

When we asked to see the yearbook photos with her senior friends, Phuong shyly said: "Because my family is poor, I did not register to take yearbook photos for grade 12."

Ms. Tran Thi Oanh, Phuong's high school homeroom teacher, said that Pham Thi Phuong's family situation is quite difficult, but she tries very hard in her studies. She was an excellent student for all three years of high school.

According to Ms. Oanh, Phuong is a Nung ethnic so every month the government partially supports her with living expenses and study expenses, but she still studies and works part-time at a coffee shop to earn extra income.

Knowing that she was having a hard time, her homeroom teacher and friends convinced her to take a photo with the class, without any cost, but the female student still refused.

Recently, knowing Phuong's exam score, the homeroom teacher had a meeting to share and encourage her to continue her studies.

"The school will accompany you because you are a very capable student. Phuong also needs to try hard to study in the future to have a good future," teacher Oanh confided.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Truc, Principal of Tay Nguyen University, said that Pham Thi Phuong, who registered to study pedagogy at the university, does not have to pay tuition and will receive a monthly support of 3.6 million VND until graduation. The school's board of directors and student organizations will care for and support her.
