In the past few days, there has been continuous heavy rain, many households in Group 4 and Group 9, Duc Xuan Ward, Thai Nguyen Province, are worried because of landslides on the hills behind their houses.

The landslide crack is about 2 meters wide and more than 20 meters long.

Ms. Luu Thi Loan, Head of Residential Group 4, said: Currently, a new landslide has appeared in alley 163 of Group 4. As soon as receiving information from the people, the staff of the residential group promptly reported and urgently coordinated with the staff of Duc Xuan ward and the people in the area to conduct a field inspection. Through inspection, it was found that the landslide crack was about 2 meters wide and more than 20 meters long. Below, there are many solidly built, high-rise houses next to each other; the distance from the house to the landslide point is about 30 meters.

Mrs. Nong Thi Dieu's household, whose house is below the landslide site, said: We discovered the landslide on the night of July 3, but at that time the landslide was not as big as it is now. Households in the area also called each other to proactively monitor and prevent landslides. My family is a household that sells electrical appliances and has a lot of goods. However, due to the risk of landslides, we left our house to live with my grandparents in Bach Thong commune (more than 20km away from home). It is safer here, but no one watches the store, we are always nervous and worried; we hope that our superiors will soon have a plan so that we can live and work in peace.

According to Ms. Luu Thi Loan, Head of Residential Group 4, in the rainy season of 2024, there were cracks and landslides in Group 4, affecting hundreds of households in the area between Group 4 and Group 9A directly and indirectly. After that, the superiors had a plan to handle and level the land. However, the leveling is not yet complete, and there are no drainage ditches.

Although it is just the beginning of the rainy season this year, many households are already worried. When it rains heavily, water flows down from the hilltop, eroding deep gullies and carrying mud along with it; without drainage ditches, water has flooded into some households’ houses.

The landslide is about 30 meters from the house.

According to Ms. Loan, every time there is heavy rain, rainwater flows down to National Highway 3, the Kon Tum section of the road often receives a large amount of mud and soil flowing with the water, causing congestion, hindering traffic, and polluting the environment... This area continues to have cracks and landslides, with a high risk of landslides.

Ms. Ma Minh Thu, a resident directly affected in the newly leveled area, said: Every time it rains heavily, water and mud flow down, and when it rains heavily for a long time, water floods into the kitchen because there is no drainage ditch. Every time like that, my family has to work hard at night to bail out water and clean up mud. I am always worried that if the water keeps pouring down like that, the risk of landslides will be very high.

People in Group 4, Duc Xuan Ward hope that authorities and sectors will soon have a plan to handle landslides.
