Russian and US foreign ministers to meet in Malaysia?

The Russian and US foreign ministers will meet on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum in Malaysia today, media reports said.

According to RT, the US State Department announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum in Malaysia on July 10.

According to the schedule published on the US State Department website, the meeting between Secretary of State Rubio and Mr. Lavrov is expected to take place in Kuala Lumpur, where they will attend the annual regional forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The US State Department said the talks between the two diplomats are scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. local time.

"I can confirm that a meeting is being prepared," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told TASS on July 10.

It is known that Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Rubio have spoken many times by phone since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 but have only met in person once during negotiations in Saudi Arabia in February to seek to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries as well as pave the way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
