This message was emphasized by speakers at the 2025 Digital Publishing Forum with the theme "The future of publishing in the digital age", co-organized by Alpha Books Joint Stock Company in collaboration with the Vietnam Digital Content Creation Alliance (DCCA) and the Digital Copyright Center (DCC) on June 24 in Hanoi .
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Chung - Director of the Digital Copyright Center said that digital publishing is part of the digital content ecosystem, so copyright needs to be protected comprehensively: from registration, distribution control by technology, communication to raise awareness to support law enforcement.
According to a preliminary assessment by the Digital Copyright Center, although the revised Intellectual Property Law 2022 and Decree 17 have come into effect, copyright infringement in Vietnam is still widespread and has not seen many positive changes.
In the digital environment, handling copyright infringement is very difficult, especially in determining the value of the damage caused by the infringement to the owner. In addition, many rights holders do not have the legal capacity or are not willing to pursue disputes to the end, causing the number of infringement cases brought to handle in recent years to almost not increase.
Concerned about the rampant illegal book trade, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen - Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution said that copyright infringement is a headache for the entire industry. He emphasized: "The publishing industry is always in a state of gasping for breath because of copyright. If copyright is not protected, all efforts to develop are meaningless . "
According to Mr. Nguyen, to prevent copyright infringement, we cannot rely only on the management agency, but need the cooperation of the whole society. In particular, there are three key points that need to be promoted .
First, perfecting the legal system on copyright, although this process is always slower than reality .
Second , strengthen the connection between copyright protection organizations, such as the Digital Communications Association, the Vietnam Publishing Association, and the Center for Copyright Protection of Books and Media;
Third , improve the effectiveness of law enforcement to create deterrence, while building a culture of respecting copyright and promoting the habit of using paid products.
Mr. Nguyen The Hung - Director of AKI Electronics Co., Ltd. shared that preventing copyright infringement is currently facing many difficulties. However, if we keep thinking "only do it when we are sure we can prevent infringement", it is very dangerous.
“We are at a favorable time when young people are approaching books in a more civilized way. Instead of just thinking about prevention, let's focus on bringing knowledge to readers in the fastest and most convenient way. When users get used to using convenient products, copyright infringement will naturally decrease,” said the Director of AKI Electronics Co., Ltd.
Mr. Hung also emphasized: “The most important keyword is to bring convenience to users. When they have the habit of paying , especially the younger generation , they will respect copyright and environmental factors .”
In addition to the traditional copyright problem, the publishing industry is also facing new challenges from artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI has the ability to synthesize and create content without human intervention, opening up great potential but at the same time raising concerns about the real value of knowledge, the role of authors and the legality of copyright management for AI-generated content.
At the forum, experts shared the same opinion that when copyright is respected and guaranteed, the Vietnamese publishing industry can develop sustainably in the digital age.
