The resignations are said to be part of a major reshuffle in the Ukrainian government , which will leave more than a third of Ukraine's cabinet positions vacant following the dismissals earlier this year.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his political allies will likely seek a replacement to restore order before he travels to the US this month, where he hopes to present a “victory plan” to President Joe Biden.

“The fall will be extremely important for Ukraine. And our state institutions should be structured so that Ukraine achieves all the results we need – for all of us,” Zelenskyy said in his evening speech.

"To do this, we have to strengthen some areas of the Government and changes in the composition of the Government have been prepared. The President's Office will also have changes."

According to a decree published on the president's website, Mr Zelenskiy also fired Rostyslav Shurma, one of his deputy chiefs of staff who was in charge of the economy .

David Arakhamia, a senior ruling party lawmaker, said there would be a “major reshuffle in the government” in which more than half of the ministers would be changed. “Tomorrow we will face a day of dismissals, and the day after tomorrow we will face a day of appointments,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Stefanishyna, who has focused on Kiev's efforts to join the European Union and the NATO military alliance, could be appointed to head a larger ministry, Suspilne television reported, citing a source in Mr Zelenskyy's party.

Meanwhile, Strategic Industries Minister Kamyshin has spearheaded Ukraine's efforts to ramp up production of defense weapons ranging from attack drones to long-range missiles amid its conflict with Russia.

“I will continue to work in the defense sector but in a different role,” Mr. Kamyshin, 40 and considered a rising star in the Ukrainian government, wrote on Telegram.

He was appointed in March 2023 after effectively managing the national railway, a vital logistics route for both civilians and the military during the first year of the conflict with Russia.

Since Mr Kamyshin took over the defence industry, Ukraine has produced thousands of long-range drones to strike at Russian territory. Last month, Mr Zelensky said Kiev had used a new “rocket drone” for the first time and also tested a new ballistic missile.
