Data from China Customs shows that in 2023, exports of vegetables, tubers, fruits and processed products from countries to this country reached 24.4 billion USD. Thailand continued to lead with a turnover of 8.6 billion USD, accounting for 36% of the market share in this market. Compared to the same period in 2022, Thailand's market share decreased by nearly 2%.
Vietnam ranked second with a turnover of 3.4 billion USD. Vietnam's market share in the Chinese market nearly doubled from 8% in 2022 to 14% in 2023.
Thus, Vietnam has now surpassed Chile - the country that has ranked second in fruit and vegetable exports to China for many years.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the reason why Vietnam has surpassed Chile in fruit and vegetable market share is due to the sudden increase in durian export turnover. Along with that, China is strongly increasing its import of processed fruit and vegetables from Vietnam, so the export turnover of this item has skyrocketed.
In 2023, Vietnam exported nearly half a million tons of durian to China.
Statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that in 2023, China imported nearly 493,000 tons of durian from Vietnam, worth 2.1 billion USD, an increase of 1,107% in volume and 1,035.8% in value compared to 2022.
Vietnam's durian market share in China's total imports increased sharply to 34.6%. The average price of imported durian from Vietnam reached more than 4,332 USD/ton.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that the demand for durian in a market of 1.4 billion people like China is currently very large. Previously, Thailand was the main supplier of durian to China, last year its market share dropped to more than 65%, reaching 929 thousand tons, worth 4.57 billion USD.
According to Mr. Nguyen, by 2025, the demand for durian in the Chinese market could reach 20 billion USD and the world's demand could reach 28.6 billion USD. Adding up all durian exporting countries in Southeast Asia is still not enough to meet the demand of this market. Therefore, there is still a lot of room for Vietnam to boost exports of this product to China.
In particular, this year, China will open up to Vietnamese frozen durian, so the export turnover of this item could reach about 3.5 billion USD.
