The surprising reason why iPhone 12 is discontinued in some European countries

France has just banned the sale of the iPhone 12 because of radiation levels higher than European standards, but a series of countries in the bloc announced that they will investigate the incident.

Specifically, on September 12, the French radiation monitoring agency announced a ban on the sale of Apple's iPhone 12 model, after tests showed that the device violated radiation exposure limits according to the European standard framework.

On September 12, the French radiation monitoring agency announced a ban on the sale of the iPhone 12 model in the country.

Accordingly, the French National Agency for Radio Frequency (ANFR) said that the specific absorption rate (SAR), an index measuring the level of radio frequency absorbed into the human body through the iPhone 12 device, exceeds the permissible standard level.

A French government representative said that a new software update from Apple could fix the problem, otherwise the ANFR will issue a recall of iPhone 12 devices across France.

However, Apple also objected to the watchdog's conclusion, asserting that the iPhone 12 has been certified by many international agencies to comply with global radiation standards.

On September 14, Belgium and Germany announced that they would review the health risks to users related to radiation from the iPhone 12.

Mathieu Michel, Belgium's digital transformation official, said the country would ask the watchdog to assess all Apple products, as well as other phone lines, in a further move.

In Germany, the network operator BnetzA reiterated that France’s move could serve as a guide for the entire European bloc. If the French experiment proves successful, Berlin will follow suit.

The Dutch digital watchdog also said it was looking into the matter and would ask the iPhone maker to explain, but stressed that there was “no significant safety risk”.

Meanwhile, Italy's industry minister said they were closely monitoring the situation and had not yet taken any concrete action.
