“Shield” to protect product brand

In the trend of integration and increasingly fierce competition, building and registering trademarks for rural industrial products not only increases the value of goods but also acts as a "shield" to protect business interests against the risk of intellectual property infringement. In Son La province, trademark registration support projects are proving effective, contributing to improving competitiveness and affirming the position of Vietnamese goods in domestic and foreign markets.

Rural industrial products (RIPs) are mostly local and traditional specialties; building and registering trademarks not only helps to identify the brand but also creates a legal basis for production, business and export. However, many rural production facilities and individual business households are still not interested or do not have enough conditions to register for trademark protection, making products vulnerable to counterfeiting and misappropriation of brand names, especially when e-commerce and export are opening up many opportunities.

Mr. Dao Van Quang, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion, said: Registering a trademark is a way to affirm legal ownership of a product, a strategic step to enhance the value of local goods. Since 2013, our province has implemented projects to support the construction and registration of trademarks for ITNT products using industrial promotion funds; successfully supported the construction and protection of 79 trademarks, contributing to promoting production, expanding markets, increasing profits for businesses, increasing income for workers and creating more new jobs.

In 2024, the Project "Support for building and registering trademarks of agricultural products" will continue to be implemented with a total budget of 170 million VND, supporting 5 units with typical products and market potential, such as: Tea products of V-Shantea Tea Production Cooperative, Phu Yen commune; dried fruits of Tay Bac Cooperative, Yen Chau commune; meat products of Venh Tay business household, To Hieu ward; bamboo products of Ngoc Phu Production and Trade Cooperative, To Hieu ward; fruit tea products, dried fruits of Chau Moc Agricultural Service and Tourism Cooperative, Moc Son ward. Each unit will be supported with a maximum of 35 million VND, logo design, trade name, support for registration and issuance of protection certificates; support for design and production of identity printed on packaging, products; promotional publications for products.

In addition, establishments are also supported in the process of building brands and completing legal documents. Typically, in 2023, the product "Thanh Phuong Smoked Buffalo Meat" of Thanh Phuong One Member Co., Ltd., To Hieu Ward, was supported by the Provincial Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Center to register for trademark protection for the product, with beautiful packaging and its own brand, helping the product to be known by many consumers.

Ms. Vu Thi Minh Phuong, Director of Thanh Phuong One Member Co., Ltd., shared: The product "Thanh Phuong Smoked Buffalo Meat" was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a typical rural industrial product at the provincial level in 2023. Each year, the Company produces and sells more than 2 tons of smoked buffalo meat, with a revenue of more than 1 billion VND, creating jobs for 2 local workers, with an average income of 6 million VND/month. We are very excited to make this unique dish of the Thai ethnic group in Son La a favorite specialty for many people.

In 2025, the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion has developed a project to support 5 IT products, with a total budget of 175 million, including: Coffee of Phieng Tam Cooperative, Chieng An Ward; processed meat of Venh Tay and Chu Van Dung business households, To Hieu Ward; dried fruit of Cao Nguyen Cooperative, Van Son Ward and Na Nga Agricultural Cooperative, Yen Chau Commune. Units will be supported with consulting, brand design, trade name, logo design and intellectual property registration.

Ms. Quàng Thị Lả, Director of Na Nga Agricultural Cooperative, Chieng Hac Commune, informed: The Cooperative specializes in processing dried bananas. In 2025, the Provincial Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Center will support the Cooperative to build and register product brands, with beautiful packaging, eye-catching logos, clear names and addresses. This is the motivation for us to expand our production scale.

It can be seen that the industrial promotion policy has been changing the awareness of owners of production and business establishments of IT products, promoting actions in brand building in rural areas. However, being granted a Certificate of Trademark Registration is only the starting point for the journey of maintaining and promoting product value. Because product quality creates a brand, trademark owners need to strictly comply with regulations and regulations on controlling certified trademarks, maintaining product quality, and maintaining reputation in the market.
