Tourists to Japan surpass pre-pandemic record

According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the number of tourists to Japan in the first half of the year increased by 65.9% compared to the same period last year - 10.7 million. The figure of 17.7 million is 6.9% higher than in 2019, marking the recovery of the country's tourism industry since the pandemic.

In June, the number of tourists to Japan hit a new record of 3.13 million, the fourth consecutive month of more than 3 million arrivals. The growth was largely due to a recovery in Chinese tourists - five times more than the same period last year.

South Korea led the market for visitors to Japan, followed by China, Taiwan and the United States. In March, Japan welcomed 3.08 million visitors, surpassing the previous record of 2.99 million in July 2019, thanks to the cherry blossom season and a sharp decline in the yen.

The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) estimates that tourists spent a total of 3.9 trillion yen ($24.8 billion) in the first half of 2024, with Chinese tourists spending 442 billion yen, mostly on shopping, and outspending visitors from other markets in the second quarter. Spending by foreign tourists in Japan rose 73.5% from 2023 and 68.6% from 2019, helped by a weaker yen and longer stays.

Real estate developer Mori Trust predicts Japan will welcome 34.5 million foreign visitors and total tourism spending will reach 6.9 trillion yen in 2024, maintaining the current pace. The Japanese government also aims to surpass the record of 31.9 million visitors in 2019. At the current pace, the target could be reached this year.
