Iran is responsible for 'every shot' fired by Houthis

US President Donald Trump said on March 17 that he would hold Iran responsible for any attack by the Houthi group in Yemen.

"From this moment on, every shot fired by the Houthis will be considered a shot fired by the arms and leadership of Iran, and Iran will be held accountable, and will suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire," President Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.

According to Reuters, the move comes as the US steps up its largest military operation in the Middle East since Trump took office in January.

Houthi attacks US aircraft carrier, threatens to continue

In response to Houthi threats to international shipping, the US launched a wave of airstrikes on March 15. On March 16, the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah and Al Jawf province (Yemen) were targeted, Al Masirah TV reported.

The Pentagon said it had struck more than 30 sites and would use overwhelming lethal force against the Houthis until they stopped their attacks. US national security adviser Mike Waltz confirmed on March 16 that US airstrikes had “killed” several Houthi leaders.

In response, the Houthis also attacked a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. In a statement on March 17, the group said it had launched a second attack on the "USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier and its accompanying warships." Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said the group would continue to target US ships in the Red Sea.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out a series of attacks on cargo ships passing through the Red Sea, saying they were doing so in solidarity with the Palestinians amid Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip. A US official told Reuters that the attacks could continue for weeks.

Washington has also stepped up sanctions pressure on Iran, while trying to bring the country to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on March 17 that Tehran would respond to the US “after careful consideration” of the issue. Last week, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei publicly rejected US President Trump’s invitation to negotiate on the nuclear issue.
