On July 14, Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City informed that after 2 months of fighting to save the life of 10-year-old TNPD, who was hit in the head by a falling tree branch, the patient has now made a spectacular recovery.
Before that, at around 7:00 p.m. on May 7, Mr. Tran Ngoc Huy (born in 1994, residing in Ward 1, old District 6) drove a motorbike carrying his son, D. (10 years old).
While stopping at a red light at the Hung Vuong - Ngo Quyen intersection (old District 5), suddenly a large tree branch fell from above and hit little D.. in the head.
The collision caused the father and son to fall onto the street. Baby D. was unconscious on the spot and was quickly taken to Cho Ray Hospital by local residents and Mr. Huy.
Doctor Tran Huy Hoang Bao - head of the neurosurgery department, Cho Ray Hospital - said that when admitted to the hospital, baby D. was in a deep coma, with brain contusions, cerebral hemorrhage, and skull cracks and dents on both sides.
After 2 weeks of intensive care, the patient began to show signs of improvement, could breathe on his own and was transferred to the neurosurgery department.
However, serious complications continued due to skull fractures and damage to the dura mater, causing cerebrospinal fluid to leak out and cause bilateral subcutaneous fluid accumulation. The patient underwent surgery to remove the bone embedded in the dura mater and to suture and reconstruct the dura mater.
Ten days after surgery, the patient's consciousness improved, but there was a dangerous condition of ventricular dilatation. Doctors continued the second surgery, placing a tube to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain to the abdomen.
On the 8th day after surgery, the patient improved significantly, recognized family members, and followed medical orders slowly. However, D. still had some sequelae due to severe brain damage. The patient was discharged to continue monitoring and recovery at home and to return to the hospital for follow-up examinations later.
The patient's mother emotionally shared that when her child was admitted to the hospital, the family did not expect that her child's condition would be so serious. They thought that a tree branch had fallen and broken her arm and leg. But the doctor said her chances of survival were low, and the family was devastated.
"But now my child can cry and recognize his parents, it's a miracle thanks to the dedicated care of the doctors and nurses. I hope he will recover soon, return to school and live a full life like any other child," the patient's mother shared.
Cho Ray Hospital waives 100% of hospital fees for boy hit in the head by falling tree
Previously, Mr. Nguyen Tri Thuc - Deputy Minister of Health , in charge of managing and operating Cho Ray Hospital, directed to exempt all hospital fees for the child patient. The previous advance payment was sent back to the child's family by the hospital.
