Viktor Gyokeres is in the spotlight with transfer rumours linking him with top Premier League clubs. |
In an interview with A Bola on June 28, Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas admitted that Gyokeres is likely to leave the club in the summer of 2025, but only for a fair price. Varandas stressed that there is no way Gyokeres will leave for less than 70 million euros.
Record later revealed that Gyokeres reacted strongly to Varandas' comments, and is said to have informed Sporting's board that he does not want to return to play for the club, regardless of the outcome of transfer negotiations this summer.
The decision appears to stem from Gyokeres' belief that the Portuguese club have gone back on their word. Initially, the two parties were said to have had an informal verbal agreement, with Sporting willing to let Gyokeres leave for a fee of €70 million.
But now, Sporting want to collect 100 million euros, equal to the contract release fee. President Varandas also denied the existence of any verbal agreement, making the conflict between the two sides more tense.
Gyokeres' decision not to return is a heavy blow to Sporting CP. His public announcement of his intention to leave could put pressure on Sporting to reach a transfer agreement soon, avoiding negative consequences in the future.
The Swede, who is contracted to Sporting CP until June 2028, impressed last season, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances for the Portuguese side. However, big European clubs are not willing to pay too much for him.
