'Teacher or evil person who beats children without mercy'

A parent exclaimed indignantly after reading the shared lines from the mother of a 4-year-old girl in the incident of her teacher beating her back black and blue for 'not going to bed', which happened in Hanoi.

Following the whole incident shared on social networks, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh (40 years old, Bo De ward, Hanoi ) could not help but feel sad and choked up. All last night, she only searched for articles related to the incident.

As she watched the images, her hands trembled and tears welled up in her eyes as she could not believe what was happening in a preschool classroom, which should have been the child’s second home. As a mother herself, Lan Anh understood how fragile and immature three- and four-year-old children are.

"The children are just learning to eat and talk, and don't know how to express their fear. Yet they are dragged, beaten, and thrown against the wall like inanimate objects? Are they teachers or evil people who beat children without mercy?" , the female parent was indignant.

Previously, she felt completely secure when sending her child to school, but after the incident, that feeling is no longer intact. "I'm just afraid that something terrible will happen to my own child. Just thinking about it makes me suffocate. As a parent, there is nothing more painful than not being able to protect your child, even in the place called your second home," the female parent said.

Not only parents, many teachers also could not hide their anger and disappointment at the violent behavior of their colleagues. Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hang, a preschool teacher with more than 15 years of experience in Hanoi, said that a physical blow to a child is a cut into society's trust ineducators .

According to Ms. Hang, choosing a career in preschool means accepting pressure and challenges, but in return, one must always maintain ethics, patience and love for children. "If you don't love, don't enter a preschool classroom. If you can't stand the crying, restlessness or stubbornness of children, it's best to leave the profession. That is the kindness needed for both yourself and your students," Ms. Hang said.

Ms. Hang affirmed that teachers not only need to be solid in their expertise but also need to know how to control their emotions, especially in a special environment like preschool.

"If you are tired, you can take a leave. If you are stressed, you can transfer. But there is no excuse for being violent with a child even once," the female teacher said. One person makes a mistake, but it can cause many others to lose their reputation. The honor of the teaching profession cannot be exchanged just because of a few individuals lacking ethics and compassion.

Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology , said that child abuse in the school environment is intolerable and the responsibility lies not only with individuals but also with the entire education system.

According to him, to deal with this situation at its root, the first important thing is to tighten and improve the quality of teacher training. "Right from teacher training colleges, it is necessary to help students understand the mission of the teaching profession, focusing on building moral qualities and appropriate behavioral skills. Students need to be trained in practical skills, and be mentally prepared to face situations in the classroom responsibly and humanely," Dr. Lam said.

He also noted that the role of educational institutions is not limited to professional training but must also regularly monitor and remind teachers about professional ethics. When violations occur, the teacher must take direct responsibility. In case of recidivism or failure to meet ethical standards, the teacher must be suspended from practice to protect students.

This expert suggested that the Law on Teachers should be supplemented with provisions that more clearly define ethical responsibilities and professional conduct. “Teachers are not only teachers, but also role models in terms of character and lifestyle for students to follow. If they cannot do that, they cannot continue to take on the role in the classroom,” Dr. Lam emphasized.

Previously, parent Ha Kieu Trinh reported that after picking up her daughter (born in 2021, class C2, Gia Thuy Kindergarten, Bo De ward) from school, she discovered a large bruise on her back. The family immediately took the child to the National Children's Hospital for a general health check-up and reported the incident to the school. The doctor concluded that half of her upper back had a patch of skin with scattered internal bleeding.

Immediately afterwards, representatives of the Gia Thuy Kindergarten Board of Directors and the classroom teacher came to the family's house to apologize. During the discussion, the teacher admitted to hitting the child 1-2 times because he "was naughty and refused to sleep".

Disagreeing with this apology, Ms. Trinh's family continued to have a meeting with the school's Board of Directors to review the classroom surveillance camera. Images extracted from the camera showed that the 4-year-old girl was dragged, brutally beaten, and even thrown against the wall by Ms. V. Not stopping there, the teacher continued to drag the girl into the hallway to beat her. Another girl lying next to her was also grabbed by the legs, pulled upside down, and thrown onto the bed by Ms. V.
