Vietnam durian exports drop to record low, imports soar

According to data from the Customs Department, in the first 5 months of 2025, Vietnam's durian exports reached 387 million USD, down 58% compared to the same period last year. This is an unprecedented decrease in recent years.

In particular, export turnover to China - a market accounting for 72% of Vietnam's total exports in 2024 - also decreased by 67%, to only 278 million USD.

The proportion of durian in the total group of exported fruits and vegetables of the whole country fell from 35% to 17%, marking a serious decline of one of the products once known as "green gold".

Meanwhile, ironically, Vietnam’s durian imports have increased sharply. Total imports reached $9.3 million in the first four months of the year – up 518% over the same period last year. The main sources came from Thailand and Malaysia.

Experts say the import is not too unusual, as foreign durians are usually for the high-end segment, consumed domestically in big cities. However, the sharp decline in exports while imports increase sharply still poses a risk of imbalance for this key industry.

Worrying signal: The market has lost its consumption axis, the chain of links is broken

The price decline that has lasted for many weeks shows that the durian market is losing direction, especially in the official export stage.

Some businesses said that China’s increasingly strict control over growing area codes and packaging facilities has caused many shipments to be returned or not cleared through customs. Along with that, the increasingly strict checks on chemical residues and traceability have created great pressure on farmers and traders.

Meanwhile, the domestic cold storage and deep processing system is still limited, making it difficult for products to be preserved for long, forcing farmers to sell at a loss during the main harvest season.

To revive the market, experts say it is necessary to:

Increase investment in cold storage systems and frozen durian processing

Promote official exports, control the quality of growing areas

Support farmers to access GAP, VietGAP and traceability standards

Strengthening market expansion outside China, especially Japan, Korea and EU.
