Pig prices remain stable, farmers consider re-herding
According to Vietnam Livestock Magazine , the price of live pigs continues to remain high, around 70,000 - 73,000 VND/kg. However, input costs have also increased, coupled with the complicated developments of disease during the rainy and stormy season, causing farmers to hesitate to restock.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tam (a pig farmer in Can Tho City) shared that over the past month, the price of live pigs has remained stable. In the recent sale, his family's live pigs were purchased by traders at 70,000 VND/kg. With this price, Mr. Tam earned a profit of about 2.5 million VND/pig (about 100kg).
“The price of live pigs is high, but the cost of feed and medicine has increased by about 10%, so profits are only average. This new period, we plan to reduce the number of pigs to re-herd because the price is trending sideways and decreasing slightly, and the rainy season is the time when many diseases are likely to arise,” said Mr. Tam.
If in March 2025, on average, Mr. Le Van Tam (a pig farmer in Can Tho City) made a profit of nearly 3 million VND/pig (about 100kg), now the profit is only 2.2 million VND.
“At the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs increased dramatically, I sold them at 78,000 VND/kg. Currently, live pigs are only purchased by traders for 70,000 VND/kg. At this price, if farmers produce their own piglets, they will still make a good profit. As for me, because the cost of piglets, industrial feed, medicine, barn cleaning... all increased, my profit has somewhat decreased,” Mr. Tam shared.
With the unpredictable stormy weather and complicated disease developments, Mr. Tam is considering reducing the number of pigs to re-herd as well as taking advantage of the empty barns to renovate and clean.
