FIFA unexpectedly breaks the rules of the Club World Cup 2025™ final. |
FIFA extended the half-time break to 24 minutes, almost double the 15-minute maximum allowed by IFAB Law 7: Playing Time. The extra time was used for a Super Bowl-style musical extravaganza, with Robbie Williams appearing before the second half.
Journalist Martyn Ziegler of The Times discovered the incident when he frankly spoke out on social network X: "FIFA said it would comply with the Laws of the Game, but arbitrarily broke the 15-minute half-time rule just to serve Infantino's 24-minute show?".
According to Ziegler, this action shows that FIFA puts the interests of showmanship and commerce above the dignity of football rules. Law 7.2 clearly states: "Players are allowed a break of no more than 15 minutes between halves, and a water break during extra time may not exceed one minute." Even referees have the right to be flexible within the allowed limits, and cannot openly turn 15 minutes into 24 minutes like that.
In fact, FIFA is not the only organization that decides the Laws of the Game. The power to amend the law belongs to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), where FIFA only holds 4 out of 8 votes, with the remaining votes going to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This arbitrary relaxation of the law is considered a bad precedent, especially when the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ has been widely considered a "disguised money-making scheme".
"A small detail like the 9-minute extra break seems insignificant, but it exposes the true face of FIFA under Infantino. It is commercializing football at all costs, regardless of the rules and spirit of fair play, thereby raising many questions for the 2026 World Cup," Sport Bible wrote.
